Last week when doing my grocery shopping I decided to pick up a few frozen dinners for lunch to bring to the office.  Since I've been trying to eat better, I was looking for a low calorie lunch and something that looked and sounded appealing.  One of the items I brought home was a South Beach Living Entree Savory Beef.  It looked good and the description sounded good too.  However, the beef wasn't exactly a hit!

South Beach Living Entree Savory Beef

This is a frozen entree from Kraft Foods.  It contains "seasoned beef steak dices in a sauce with mushrooms, onions, celery &carrots with broccoli florets in cheese sauce".  The entree weighs 9.4 oz. and is a good size for a "just right" lunch.

The package drew my attention with the words, "a nutritious way to help satisfy hunger", 220 calories and 20 grams of protein on the front of the package.

Cooking is easy, you just pop the package into the microwave after removing from the package (of course).  You don't have to remove the plastic covering on this one until it has been nuked for 3 minutes.  Then you will pull it back and stir and nuke for another minute.

My Thoughts

I found this to be a pretty good dinner for under $3.00, I believe it was actually $2.97 or something like that.  I enjoyed the broccoli and cheese the most.  It cooked up well and wasn't limpy, still firm like a steamed vegetable should be.  The "savory beef" was cut into different size cubes which was a bit annoying.  I found some too large and without a knife at work to cut them up, gave me a full mouth to say the least.  I also found that some of the beef cubes were a bit tough.  The beef is served in a brown gravy that was a bit too thin.  It really didn't have much of a taste to it either.  As for the carrots, celery and mushrooms in the gravy--they are very tiny pieces and not a whole lot of them.  I found one slice of mushroom in my dinner.  Ha!

Overall

If you are looking for a low calorie entree, South Beach Living Entree Savory Beef fits the bill.  Just don't expect it to be a gourmet meal.  It seems that in order to take advantage of low calorie frozen entrees, you have to endure high sodium content.  Gag!

I'm giving this one an average rating for the tough pieces of beef and the high sodium content and a warning to eat this at your own risk!

It's so nice of you to be my fan! I'm going to click on being yours too. Yah, I know what you mean about these "better eating" things. I'm trying to reform and some I like and some I don't. I nearly always have to eat a piece o fruit or something with them to feel satisfied. Your grandson is adorable. Happy Birthday to him!

I hate that--what a waste of money. I need to start writing letters to companies when something is really bad. Another thing to add to my list of things to do...ha!

I never buy these frozen or prepared foods. I've yet to find one that tasted good to me. And if you look at the sodium content, that's about half of the sodium you should get for the entire day. While they may appear to be a healthy thing to eat, they really aren't if you're watching your salt intake. I may be picky, but the frozen meals never taste quite right to me, either. I'll stick with real (fresh) foods! Thanks, BB, for telling us about this one!

Unsavory beef?

kid-kansas wrote on Apr 10, 2008 at 7:45PM

1 little mushroom??? FOUL!! ...lol You would think they could cut the meat better and have it be tender! I guess they forgot that sodium is a bad thing! Sorry it was such a flop though ;( Ron
