I am owned by a golden retriever who leaves a little of herself almost everywhere she lays. I am also a dog groomer who is asked at least once a day what to do about excess shedding. I've found a wonderful inexpensive tool that groomers and pet owners can use and the dogs love it...The Zoom Groom. It will not replace your regular slicker or pin brush for keeping the coat mat free, but for hair removal it just can't be beat.
The longer "teeth" on the Zoom groom is better for longer haired double coated breeds, like the golden, than a regular rubber curry. It reaches the undercoat better and gently rakes it out. It is great for shorter haired breed like labs as well.
The dogs seem to love their Zoom Groom treatments better than a regular brush, because it's like a massage. I've never had one "protest" as some will with brushing or combing.
For serious deshedding in the shop, I will often use the Zoom groom along with other deshedding tools, but I only recommend the Zoom Groom to clients as there is virtually no chance of brush burn.
Just be careful not to leave it lying around. It's rubbery, bright colored appearance looks like one of the dog's chew toys, and it doesn't take long for a big dog to tear it apart.
