The Verdict: Forget tennis balls and invest in a Kong Rubber Ball.  The upfront cost will make you gasp but it will pay itself off in days.

About the Kong ball:  Most anyone who has a dog has heard of Kong products.  They are really high quality balls and toys for dogs of all sizes.  They are made of solid, natural rubber that is puncture resistant and made to withstand the roughest play.

My experience:  To be quite honest I'm a little afraid of and freaked out by dogs and it takes me a long time to warm up to each one that I meet and I don't have a dog of my own.  In addition to the dog phobia which makes me reluctant to reach into a dog's mouth to retrieve a ball, I'm also a germophobe. So when I dogsit for family members I really dislike playing ball.  Most people give their dogs tennis balls that get all wet, dirty, and slimy and I really abhor picking them up to throw to the dog.

My husband's sister was away on an extended trip and we doggie sat Misty for a few days and ended up with the nasty tennis ball in our posession.  It was as described above and totally disgusting.  So I went to the pet store and found the Kong section.  Even though I'm not a dog owner, I know all about Kong as I've heard rave reviews of their products.

Misty is a 40 pound lab so I got her the Kong Ball for large dogs.  I don't consider her a large dog but the package said she is large according to her weight so I got the large.  It looked too big but when I got it home and threw it to her it fit into her mouth just fine.

Misty and I played with that ball for the few days she was with us and it was in great shape when it was time to pass the dog to my brother-in-law the following week.  He took one look at the ball and first chastised me for spending $9 on a rubber dog ball when tennis balls work just fine.

Well several weeks later the Kong is alive and in great shape.  Jim fully expected that it would be popped like a tennis ball within a few hours but since it is solid through and through it won't pop.  Misty has been happily using her Kong Ball for about 2 months now and it's still in great shape without even a tooth mark on it.

Final thoughts:  Kong Balls come in medium and large sizes.  They are really high quality and will last much longer than any other ball, especially balls that are hollow inside.  They cost anywhere from $7-$9 but are well worth the cost since they hold up incredibly well even under much use.

Kong balls are a great product. My dog Barkley will chew on his tennis ball as he is running back from retrieving it and ends up popping it. But he can chew on that Kong all day and not pop it. Of course if he sits down and gnaws on the edge he does take chunks out of it. But this is one tough cookie.

Great review. You made a lot of good points in there that was both useful and helpful. If I ever get a dog that will retrieve balls, I'll be there in the Kong section. We have 2 Yorkies. One retrieves cloth and rubber toys, while the other only retrieves food, both from her dish and the floor while I'm chopping. Thanks for the info.

Hanna doesn't play with toys - we're her toys:) but she has two Kongs that we put food in and she loves them. Jo
