Hanna's had the large Kong Dog Toy since she was very young. I later bought her the small one. She loves her Kongs.
A Closer View
I see our Kongs more as a way to stimulate Hanna's brain than as a toy. They serve many purposes though ncluding being great for teething puppies. This is why we bought Hanna her first Kong. Hanna never liked toys. She's almost four and won't play with a toy. We are her toys.
I was talking with someone online who works with dogs. Hanna was just a young puppy. This woman asked me if I had bought her a Kong to which I said no that I hadn't even heard of this item. She said that it will make her use her brain and give her something to do other than chew on our fingers. We were traveling at the time and found only the large Kong which costs about $10.00. Believe it or not though she was about 2 pounds she was able to enjoy it.
The large red Kong is 4 inches long and 1 inch in diameter. Both Kongs are made identically and look identical except for the size. The small red Kong is 3 inches long. The large Kong is made for medium to large dogs so even now at 8 pounds it's too big for Hanna but I still give it to her however most often I now give her the small Kong.
They are very strong and if you dog plays she may chase it and play fetch with it. It's made in the USA from a non-toxic puncture resistant type of natural rubber. It will bounce.
The small one costs about $6.00.
How does Hanna use it?
The Kongs have openings on each end. One side has a large opening; the other side a much smaller opening. The women with whom I spoke told me she puts peanut butter in her dog's Kong. If you go to a pet store you'll find all sorts of products to put in the Kong.
Hanna thinks wet dog food is a treat. We only give her dry dog food in her bowl except when we go out. Then some wet food goes in there to keep her busy while we sneak out.
The last time I gave her a Kong (see picture) she ate the food very quickly. I really didn't stuff it tightly because she had had a lot of treats that day. One trick I learned was to freeze the Kong with food in it. Hanna then has to work hard to get it out and that keeps her busy while she tried to figure out how to get the food out.
Hanna's Thoughts
Boy oh boy do I love my Kongs. Mommy is right. I don't play with toys. I don't like to play fetch. I won't even learn because I'd rather fetch Mommy's fingers. My Kong keeps her busy. I know when I was little I was a real pain during Mommy and Daddy's dinner time so they gave me a Kong to keep me busy and it worked. I could be a brat and not be well behaved during their dinner to get a Kong but I'm not - well sometimes I am. Anyway these are super and if your dog doesn't have one put it in her Christmas, Hanukkah or whatever stocking you celebrate and if you don't then just because! Oh and it must have worked because everyone says I'm very smart.
