Even my power chewer shepherd hasn't chewed it to death!

Do you have a "power chewer?" A power chewer is a dog that can chew up anything in a matter of micro-seconds. Power chewers are usually large dogs. I have a shepherd who weighs 95 pounds, and he can go through a large ham bone in less than five minutes.

When one of my dog lists did a "not so secret santa" Christmas exchange this past year, the woman who drew my name knows about power chewers. Her dogs dwarf my shepherd. One of the thing she sent for Rambo was the Black Kong for Tenacious Chewers. It is touted as the world's strongest rubber dog toy. After four and a half months of abuse, the Black Kong still lives!

The Kong is a 6-inch rubber tube with holes at each end. You can stuff treats or peanut butter or cream cheese in the Kong, and this will keep your dog amused for hours. Even a power chewer! A favorite is to stick cookie treats inside, then seal the ends with cream cheese or peanut butter and freeze the whole thing. Even my shepherd, who is very food motiviated, takes more than 15 minutes to get at the treats sealed inside. No matter how much he chews on the rubber, it does not break.

The Kong website does recommend supervision with tenacious chewers, as all dogs, no matter how much or how little they chew their toys should be supervised with all toys.
