As a dog trainer, I bring up the Kong in every class I teach because they are amazing.
They keep dogs busy for hours if stuffed with yummy treats. This also stimulates your dogs brain as they try to get the treats out.
Have a dog with separation anxiety? A Kong may be just the thing to curb this behavior. Give a frozen stuffed Kong right before you leave and see the difference. Most all dogs with SA suffer the symptoms as you are leaving and right after you leave...if they have an irresistible Kong to keep them busy, it's easy for them to settle down.
They Kong itself is not exciting, I have students all the time that say, "my dog doesn't even look at his Kong". Well, you have to know how to use them. They are made to be stuffed with all your dogs favorite things. To stuff, fill the small hole with something like peanut butter or cream cheese to seal it. Then fill half way with your dogs normal food. Then (this is the fun part), fill with pretty much anything you want and your dog will love. Left-overs from the table go in my Kongs. I love using scrambled eggs, meat scraps, yogurt, small pieces of cheese, gravy, etc., etc., etc. Then pop them in the freezer and they are even better (and take longer for your dog to consume).
Please note, there are some things that dogs should NEVER eat. Stay away from all sugary desserts especially chocolate. No onions or peppers, no spicy foods, no bones of any kind. Look up more hazardous foods for pets and make sure to exclude those from the Kongs.
My own dogs are on a strict dog-food only diet, except when it comes in the Kongs. For one thing, there is such a small amount of human food in the Kong and also they don't see it as 'coming from the table'.
I have 2 dogs so I fill 4 Kongs each evening (after washing of course) and freeze them. The next day the dogs get one in their crates when I go to work and one in the evening when I want them to settle down. I have 8 total Kongs so I can rotate them.
As with any toy, always inspect the Kongs for signs of wear. Replace if any is noticed. Kongs are tough but not indestructible. The black ones are stronger and a good choice for heavy chewers.
