When our dog was a puppy he was chewing everything in the house to shreds.  We tried many different methods to control this behavior and because our puppy was so large, he would chew through every chew toy we bought him within ten minutes or so.  Our local pet shop recommended the Kong Puppy Rubber Chew Toy/Treat Dispenser. When we saw the toy, we couldn't imagine our dog even being interested in a rubber toy, but we bought the medium sized one for $4.99.  He was interested and a year and a half later, he still is.

The Facts

  • Made from 100% natural rubber
  • Promote the development of healthy teeth, soothe sore gums and encourage good chewing behavior
  • Small size measures 2 3/4", Medium size Puppy Kong measures 3 1/2", Large size Puppy Kong measures 4"
  • Recommended for puppies 2-9 months old

My Experience

We brought the Puppy Kong home to our puppy and at first he wasn't real interested.  We put a couple of small dog treats in the hollow end and he had a ball trying to get them out.  We would bounce the toy on the kitchen floor and because of its odd shape. it bounced in weird directions that had Rebel running around like crazy trying to catch it.  Now that we got him interested in the toy, we wanted him to chew on it.  That was the main reason for our purchase.  For the first week or so, he was only interested when we provoked him with but was still not chewing on it.  We added a small scoop of peanut butter in the hollow end this time and this got him licking it and holding it in his paws which eventually turned into chewing.  We were really happy that he was finally using it for the purpose we intended him to use it for.  This has to be the most durable chew toy that I have ever seen.  Here it is, a year and a half later and the Puppy Kong is still completely intact.  Our dog literally devours anything else we have given him to chew on within minutes so this was an excellent choice and a great buy.

My Final Viewpoint

The Kong Puppy Rubber Chew Toy/Treat Dispenser gave our puppy a real chewing workout and was a fun toy as well.  Today it continues to be his favorite toy.  I definitely recommend this product for teething puppies and Kong also sells these rubber toys for fully grown dogs as well.  Due to the unbelievable durability of this chew toy, I am giving it a 5 star rating.

Hi Jo,
When I am training a dog that doesn't play with toys I tend to offer them a toy called a buster cube. It's hard durable plastic and you put his food or cookies in it. In the inside of the toy is a maze that Hanna will have to work the food through in order to get it out. It works great even for the fussiest of dogs,. Good Luck!

My mom has one for her dog and everytime she leaves she fills it up with all different treat and it keeps her busy...she is a smart dog and now tosses it up in the air and lets it drop to losen up all the goodies inside.
