Although Metal Gear Solid 2 was another huge hit for Konami, a lot of gamers including me absolutely hated the thought of some whiny wuss (Raiden) being the future star of the Metal Gear instead of the tough as nails Solid Snake. Well, it looks like Konami was listening because good old Snake returns (or is that really him) in this special prequel to all the Metal Gear games here. Instead of continuing the story after Metal Gear Solid 2 (or least try to explain what the heck was going on in that game anyway) part 3 takes place in the past to help explain some of the origins this long running series.

In the 1960's and during the height of the cold war one of Snake's mentors is meeting with a group of terrorists and he needs to investigate what they are up to. Snake must now enter restricted area all alone with no weapons or rations so again you must use stealth and the environment to survive. The big difference in this stealth/action game here is there is no radar which makes the adventure much more difficult especially for casual players.

Despite a few flaws the new graphics are absolutely stunning and the game is filled with lush jungle environments and rusted fortresses. The game also comes loaded with a bunch of wacky but very cool characters like a 100 year old man that's good at sniping, a freak that likes to jumps around in tall tree and use scare tactics, and even a underdressed (but very deadly) women who has a huge scar on her and is excellent at close range combat. This game even includes a bunch of mini games and side quests like finding those crazy little monkeys from the Ape Escape series.

Metal Gear Solid 3 is still a very cool game with only a few minor nagging issues. Just like MGS2 if you like a game with a lot of cinemas then you'll love this game while others will be bored to tears plus the dialogue isn't the most exciting either in certain points. Still if you loved the last few games Metal Gear Solid 3 is another great edition to the series and one of the more compelling action games for the PS2 but other players may not understand what all the fuss is about especially since the game can start out rather difficult.
