It used to be more ecconomical to buy a whole new printer than to replace your ink cartridges. I have several in my office graveyard to attest to that. Then there was the onset of the cartridge refills. I tried to do that myself once but it didn't work. Then I took one to a retailer to have filled and learned that you have to bring it in while it still has some ink in it--what a rip-off. The solution? The Kodak 5100 All-in-One printer? The cartridges are the same prices as some retailers charge for refills. Instead of paying $50 for one cartridge, you can spend $25 and have both color and black replaced. But, just having cheap cartridges isn't a good enough reason to buy a printer. However, this is Kodak, the picture people, so you know that you will get good quality picture printing. The scanning and printing are all top-quality. It's still pretty new, so I am still learning about it, but so far, I am extremely happy with this purchase. I only wish I had bought it a little earlier when I first saw it because initially it offered 3 extra black ink cartridges in the box. My only complaints are that it is a little slower than I thought it would be and that you can't fill the whole glass with things to scan because it only scans the size of a normal sheet of paper, unless there is a setting that I haven't discovered yet. It's a little big if you are cramped for home office space, but it still beats having a separate printer and scanner.
