It used to be more ecconomical to buy a whole new printer than to replace your ink cartridges.  I have several in my office graveyard to attest to that.  Then there was the onset of the cartridge refills.  I tried to do that myself once but it didn't work.  Then I took one to a retailer to have filled and learned that you have to bring it in while it still has some ink in it--what a rip-off.  The solution?  The Kodak 5100 All-in-One printer?  The cartridges are the same prices as some retailers charge for refills.  Instead of paying $50 for one cartridge, you can spend $25 and have both color and black replaced.  But, just having cheap cartridges isn't a good enough reason to buy a printer.  However, this is Kodak, the picture people, so you know that you will get good quality picture printing.  The scanning and printing are all top-quality.  It's still pretty new, so I am still learning about it, but so far, I am extremely happy with this purchase.  I only wish I had bought it a little earlier when I first saw it because initially it offered 3 extra black ink cartridges in the box.  My only complaints are that it is a little slower than I thought it would be and that you can't fill the whole glass with things to scan because it only scans the size of a normal sheet of paper, unless there is a setting that I haven't discovered yet.  It's a little big if you are cramped for home office space, but it still beats having a separate printer and scanner.

I love this printer. One problem that I had with my old inkjet is if you got the page wet by laying it on a table where a glass had sweated or something, the ink would run. This ink does not run, my kids have gotten it wet already. It makes nice clean copies, and I have used it a lot because I homeschool my kids. That's the reason we purchased this particular printer. We tried refilling the old cartridge, even buying the "recycled" ones sold for 10 to 15 dollars at shops that refill cartridged, and they didn't work either. We are very happy with this printer (and the price to replace the cartridges especially)!
