Several weeks ago I was watching TV and heard about a site called Kiva.org. A news program was doing a story about ways to give back and make a difference in the world with limited resources. The story featured a woman in a developing country who was in the business of selling dry cereal at an open air market. She needed extra money to buy more supplies and have the ability to increase sales and make more money to support her family and hopefully someday lift them out of poverty.
She only needed about $100; not much money here but a fortune in her country. So her business was featured on...
review »www.kiva.org has made a difference in my life and I have only discovered this fantastic website 2 days ago!
On a recent episode of Oprah, President Bill Clinton was on talking about his book "Giving" and Philanthropy. During this episode, the creators of a magnificent website were on talking about www.kiva.org.
This is how it works:
1. Sign on to Kiva.org and become a "lender"
2. Search through the loans that are needed. You can search according to sex, country, amount of loan, how long they have requested a loan, how long it will take to pay the loan back and so on. There is also a very...
review »Kiva is a cool new approach to doing something good. It's not like most charity where once you give, the charity uses your money, or gives it away to people who need it, and then it's gone. With Kiva, you loan the money to a specific borrower of your choosing, and then it's repaid back to you when they repay the loan. You can choose to reloan the money to someone else, or to keep the cash.
It's a great way to help entrepreneurs in less fortunate places help make money to improve their lives and could end up not even costing you anything at all. While the rate of non-payment on the loans...
review »Kiva lets you connect with and loan money to unique small businesses in the developing world. By choosing a business on Kiva.org, you can "sponsor a business" and help the world's working poor make great strides towards economic independence. Throughout the course of the loan (usually 6-12 months), you can receive email journal updates from the business you've sponsored. As loans are repaid, you get your loan money back.
