KitchenAid mixers are, by far, the best on the market, and have been for years. My mother just replaced hers, and she's had it since the 1970's at least. They are durable, hard-working, easy to care for, and yes they are bulky and big, but I like that since that provides stability and large capacity.
There are a lot of attachments you can get, beyond the three basic paddles. I love the cheese grater attachment because I hate grating it by hand. I also want to try the ice cream maker attachment!
My biggest recommendation when buying a Kitchenaid mixer is to fork over the extra money to get the biggest. I have the smaller capacity bowl and making a large batch of bread or a double batch of cookies tends to get batter up into the top of the mixing attachment which makes clean up a bit more tedious. Also, the smaller bowl does not have a handle, which I hate, because sometimes its hard to lift and pour something out of it using only the edge to hold on to. I believe the bigger version (Artisan) comes with a flour shield thing, which would be very handy for someone like me who is impatient and doesn't like to add my flour in slowly.
The extra money you spend will be a good investment for many years to come.
