My grandma had a KitchenAid mixer, my mom has one, and now I have the KitchenAid Pro 6 qt. one.  It is, BY FAR, the best kitchen appliance you can purchase.  It's definitely worth the price, and you can find an attachment for just about any task at hand.  The colors are amazing, although I ended up with a charcoal grey one because it was a gift.  An instruction manual is not necessary, as it is so simple to operate!  We use this mixer for both baking and cooking.  We're able to mash an insane amount of potatoes at once, and I can make several (thick) batches of cookies all at the same time.  Gone are the days of making single batches.  In fact, I made a recipe recently that required hand mixing dough, and my husband immediately said, "why aren't you using your mixer for this?"  The mixer is pretty heavy, so I recommend finding a corner of your kitchen with an outlet that you can just use as home for the mixer.
