As we got ready for my son to take over as my wife's personal assistant (the PC term for helper) aka Man-ny, we decided to upgrade some of the kitchen items necessary to prepare food.
Oven mitts were on the list so we went to Linens and Things. My wife didn't know if the silicone mitts would work all that well, so we looked at the more traditional oven mitts. This one, by Kitchen Aid, had a good name, reinforced palm, a reasonable price at $7.99 and looked good, too, with a ring we could use for hanging it if we did not want it in a drawer. I also liked the fact that they were long enough to fitover the start of my wrists. They came in complementary colors of a red wrist and cream colored palm, with one size fits all sizing. They did not have separate left and right so we bought two.
The unit is 100% cotton and is machine washable.
It works passably for items that are not oven hot and do not have to be carried far. Unfortunately, it's not sufficient to protect hands from stuff that comes out of the oven nor stuff that has to be carried for more than a few feet. I noticed discomfort and small amounts of pain last week when carrying something and my son noticed the same thing.
I'm astonished that a company with the reputation of Kitchen Aid would put out an item so badly suited for its intended use. I cannot recommend this at all.
I am going to Linens and Things later today to buy replacement gloves, which will be silicone.
