I got my Kirby from my mother, who fell for the sales pitch from the "nice young man" who showed up at her door one morning. Turns out it was too much vacuum for her; the machine is heavy, and she lives in a tiny little house that's packed with furniture. I traded her my little light plastic Panasonic, and now we're both happy. The major downside of the Kirby is that it's heavy. Heavy, heavy. But it's built to last, and there aren't many appliances nowadays that can claim that. The Kirby does a fabulous job as a vacuum, plus it's got lots of fun attachments if you've got the time and patience to sit down with all the parts and the manual. The carpet shampooer does a great job and it's a lot easier to deal with this than to go to the store, rent one of the machines, lug it around, and have to get it back on time. This is a good vacuum for a man, too. I lent my Kirby to a friend for awhile when he was first on his own, and he loved it. The self-propulsion feature is not only helpful, but necessary. I would recommend a Kirby because they last forever and work great, but I'd also recommend you find a used one.
