Call me old-fashioned, but it drives me crazy how disposable everything is these days. The first "big" purchase my husband and I made once we got married was a Kirby vacuum cleaner. My husband had sold them in the past and knew the quality of this item. It was a pricey purchase for newlyweds but the dog hair in the house drove me crazy. I have had my Kirby for 20 years now and have only had to have it serviced one time to replace the rotating bar. I have heard people complain that Kirbys are heavy and hard to manage. They may be a little heavier than the cheap plastic counterparts but that's because they are built to last a lifetime. I love the flexibility. I use it on carpets of all thicknesses, hardwood floors. When I attach the hose I can use it to vacuum steps and cobwebs on the ceiling and ceiling fans. I have taken off the upright handle and used it as a hand-held to vacuum beds and other furniture. Even after 20 years, it has great suction, and I need this because we have 3 dogs in the house. Another thing I love about it are the attachments. My favorite is the hand-held rotating brush (the force of the air makes the brush rotate). My husband's favorite attachment is the beard trimmer. It attaches to the end of the hose and the force of the air makes the trimmer work and it sucks up the cut hair as it trims! You can even switch the hoses to blow air out instead of sucking it in. We have used this many times to blow up inflatable pools and air mattresses. Friends have told me that Kirbys are just way too expensive but I just smile as they have to go back to the store for a new vacuum cleaner every couple years because their cheap ones have died. My husband laughs and says I talk about my vacuum cleaner like it's one of my kids when I say, "I love my Kirby!"

I've sometimes considered Kirby, but the price always made me change my mind. I wonder how they compare to Dyson?
