i've had this vacuum cleaner for several years and it's still going strong.  living out in the country we get a lot of dirt tracked into the entry and this will pick it all up!  it's durable and will pick up anything i've tried.  the only problem is having to change to the attachments hose when you want to clean curtains or apolstry- etc.  but you'd have that with any upright.
