Kindergarten Cop - 1990  —

This one is not an awful film.  Parts of it are pretty funny.

Note that it is rated PG-13  and that's definitely what the film is.  The problem was that this film was marketed as a light and breezy family Christmas time movie that you could take your whole family too.   The commercials and trailer didn't show a couple of the more terrifying scenes where a drug dealer threatens to shoot a child' in front of his family and school children.

It was irresponsibly marketed when it was first released and like several other parents I took my very young child to see this one.    I was really made by the time I left the theater, my child was so scared and freaked out she was crying.  WOW.

Now it is rated PG-13 and usually that's a big warning to parents to be careful--but usually you get a sense from the previews what to expect from a film too.    I thought some foul language was probably the reason.

The movie's plot:  Arnold Schwarzenegger plays Kimble a very dedicated cop who goes undercover as a Kindergarten school teacher in a quiet Northwestern community.  You see he's after a dangerous drug dealer who has an estranged wife and 6 year old son.   Arnold thinks the bad guy will be showing up to try and evade arrest and reconnect to his family.

It is funny to see Arnold being over-whelmed by a class of kindergarten students.  It's got a litlle romance, some humor,  cute kids... and then unfortunately before it's over it's got some very intense violent scenes that will hit home too  hard at the under 10 crowd.

In response to bkovacs's comment from Mar 27, 2009 at 8:58AM:

A clever situation was set up, there were strong somewhat successful comedic elements in the first half of the picture but the pay-off was rather weak and predictable. Somewhat entertaining for adults.

Forgetting about its marketing and the experience you had with your child, what do you as an adult think about this movie? Do you recommend other adults avoid the film, or are you saying that it's just not appropriate for kids?

I agree that this is not a kid's film, not by a long shot. However, as an adult, I enjoyed the heck out of it.

Anyway, just wondering...
