This story opens in 1964, in the middle of a blizzard. Norah Henry goes into labor during the night, and her husband, Dr. David Henry, drives them to his office, knowing that in that due to the storm, the hospital is too far away. His nurse, Caroline Gill, is there waiting to meet them.
Their son, Paul, is born, perfectly healthy. Shortly after, David realizes that Norah is actually giving birth to twins, and a daughter, Phoebe, is born next. David soon realizes thought, that his daughter was born with Down's Syndrome.
