great product to cover Black paint!

5

LOVE this product! Had a piece of furniture that was painted BLACK and my daughter wanted it to be LIGHT BLUE! I was thinking I would be there forever trying to cover the black or sanding the black off! Boy was I wrong this product is amazing! I started with 1 coat on it and was thinking how much it covered, you could see a very light streak of black in a few spots but not black showing through. I did 1 coat and waited till the next day, I started putting a second coat on the top and ran out of it, I figured I was going to try a inconspicuous place and see how it looked. I did a bottom piece and put one coat on of the blue. I waited a few hours and went to look and it was all covered. I did a single coat on the entire thing and it looked great there was NO black showing through. I did put a second coat of the blue on to make sure it was all covered, but there was no need for a second coat of the KILZ! One coat covered the black paint. I would highly recommend this to anyone that is changing a color! I went from the darkest color to LIGHT blue and only need to coat it 1 time. I could have gotten away with one coat of the blue had I realized it was going to work, but I did a thinner layer convinced I was going to have to do AT LEAST 2 coats of it.

Gets the job done without issues!

Have used this primer for years and it is always the one I choose. I used to be an antique dealer and used it all the time to prime painted and unpainted furniture before painting again. Goes on smoothly, covers well and has relatively low odors. Worth the money and useful for so many projects. Have used it to paint rooms, indoor furniture, outdoor furniture and more! Just used it to prime a room that our paint of choice ended up too dark and it left a beautiful finish for the correct color. Next project? Outdoor shed and some rusty antique lawn chairs. =)

Fantastic stain blocker & protector

I've used this product on my ceiling when there was a large water stain on it from a missing shingle on my roof. Not only did Kilz cover the stain perfectly, it protected the ceiling surface from water coming through again. Excellent product! I wholeheartedly recommend this product to save money & repair one's walls.

Sealed in the stains

Our oil burner went bad last year and covered all the walls with soot which was greasy and black. So the project of repainting all the walls began. We could not just paint over the walls with regular paint and needed something to seal in the black and stains before applying the paint. One coat of Kilz was not enough , it dried rather quickly but you could still see the soot . We applied a second coat which really covered it up and was fine. The Kilz actually could have passed for white painted walls but we wanted some color. We did every wall in our home with this before applying paint and it looks fine, no black no leaking of stains through the Paint and was easy to use. It is a bit thicker than paint but not much. It costs more but was worth the price and we had no choice if we wanted our walls to look new again. I would recommend this for mold, stains , or whatever you do not want to come through you paint then this is what you should try.

Poor product

This primer is terrible. I used it to prime the walls in a tiny powder room. One 2x3 ft. area on one wall had to be repaired where we removed a medicine cabinet and the other walls were plain latex paint. The Kilz covered very poorly and it didn't matter if I used a brush or the roller, the Kilz would just just lift off if the brush or roller even **touched** the wet area where I had just painted. Forget about trying to roll the Kilz smooth...just made a big mess and lifted and streaked the primer. We are returning the rest of the Kilz to the store. Looks like I'll have to sand off the primer I put on because it is such a mess that I'm afraid to put the finish coat on and it will look awful. I wish I had read these reviews before buying the Kilz for this little project. I have used it in the past and this never happened. Perhaps they reformulated the primer, but now it is awful!

Kilz works great!

I have been working on painting every room in my house over these past few months, and some of the colors that the previous homeowners chose were interesting to say the least. I have tried several different primers in attempt to cover the awful colors on the walls and none have worked as well as Kilz has. This paint works great at covering bold, loud colors in as few coats as possible. I also like that it "seals" up the wall so I don't have to worry about things like mold and mildew growing in rooms that are infamous for being damp and steamy (bathrooms and basement). This paint is very fast drying, so as soon as I finish one coat around the room, I can start back over and the wall I started on is dry. It is nice not to have to wait around for the paint to dry before I can do more coats of paint. I like how low odor this paint is, that is nice since I have an infant in the house and in the winter months it's too cold to open the windows up to ventilate. Even though this paint is a little bit more pricey than the store and off brand paints are, it is well worth the extra money!

Kilz Latex Primer-Sealer-Stainblocker-Paint resurrects any room

Kilz 2 Latex Paint/Primer/Stainblocker/Sealer *kills* the competition!  This is one of the best products of this type on the market today. The price per gallon is very reasonable for all the work and headaches Killz 2 saves you. I remodel houses for resale as tertiary business and I don't think I could be successful at it without Killz 2. The paint primer goes on very thick and is very homogenous in its consistency. One positive attribute of Killz 2 Paint Primer is that it spreads with ease and dries as quick as the crack of a whip. This is a great advantage when you have to do a second coat or add another color of paint to a wall. The greatest advantage Killz 2 has over other quality paint primers is how amazingly effective that Killz 2 covers over deep stains and blemishes. Trust me, I have any kind of stain or mess on a wall you can comprehend(or not comprehend!). There has yet to be a stain or mark that Killz 2 can't conquer. Another excellent benefit Killz 2 provides is in the minimalization of cost and time of labor due to it's quality coating. You will rarely have to do a second coat with Killz 2. This saves you tons of moolah, effort, and time. The Killz Pain Primer is an awesome benefit to anyone needing to paint a room or house. This paint primer is worth its weight in gold, indeed(Too bad it's not gold, though!).

decent primer

I have used this primer throughout my entire house.  The biggest problem I have with this primer is that it splashes everywhere in the house.  You have to make sure that everything is covered by dropcloths as it will get everywhere!  It does go on very nicely and evenly.  And when you put the paint over that layer, I have been extremely happy with how nicely the next layer of paint goes on.  I have never tried to get this type of primer tinted to see if it works even better.  I think if I used a very dark color it would probably be worth it.  I would not use this primer over glossy, satin or semi gloss paint as I don't think it would work nearly as well as the Zinsser 1-2-3 Primer.  This primer is obviously very popular as it is sold frequently at home depot and lowe's.  I don't have much else to say about this primer other than it's really good!

Had to reprime after the walls sucked in the Kilz

2

Our house came with every single wall covered in thick flowered wallpaper. We were finally able to steam most of it off, but a lot of glue remained. My mother suggested that instead of using regular primer, we try Kilz, because it was supposed to keep the glue from leaking through into a coat of paint. I don't know whether our walls (we can't tell what they're made of) affected the outcome, but we ended up having the Kilz barely cover anything. The first roll would go on OK, but if you brought the roller over it again at all, it came off and left big uncovered spaces. Since the underlying wall was bright blue, we really needed it to cover well and the Kilz did not do the trick. We finished that coat, but after it dried we got out the primer we'd used for the other rooms and used that. It was fine, covered everything and didn't come off when being rolled over like the Kilz did. Again, I can't be totally sure this was the Kilz because our walls are a strange material, but the other primer worked on them just fine.

Product works great but very sticky and messy to work with

My husband and I bought a mobile home which had water damage in the past from a leaky roof.  We bought the Kilz primer/paint for the ceilings and it covered these spots with just one coat.  It has been a year ago that we had done this and it still hasn't bled back threw.  It is definately a product that once you are done with the roller and brushes, just throw them away because it is near impossible to wash them and resue them but certainly worth it in the long run.
