I have some free weights around the house that I use to do light weight lifting from time to time.  Currently I use Keys Fitness STD Dumbbells, which are sold either in a set of 10, 12, 15, 25, and 30 pounds dumbbells or sold individually. Mine are black, but they are also sold in a variety of colors, such as green, pink, light blue, purple, and orange.

What I like about these dumbbells is the neoprene coating, which is like a thin, soft layer of foam. This makes it easier to maintain a hold on the weight and you do not need gloves. The coating also protects the metal inside from rusting or exposing any rough edges.

The Keys Fitness STD Dumbbells have ridges on the ends which keeps them from rolling around and also allows you to easily stack them up. I sometimes see them stacked-up into little pyramid formations. Keys Fitness also sells racks that will hold their weight equipment.

I mostly use free weights like dumbbells to maintain some strength, not body building (these are too light for that). I prefer to lift the weights slowly for 8-10 repetitions, and maybe do that twice (2 sets). If I feel stiff or have not exercise much recently I will start with the lighter weights than shift to the heavier size to prevent sudden muscle strain. It's a good idea to stretch before using them too, although I confess I don't always do it myself.

Keys Fitness STD Dumbbells are durable, easy to use, and do not take up a lot of room.  I have seen some dumbbells where the neoprene covering starts to peel off after heavy usage, but that has not happened to my Keys set yet.  I recommend theses if you want to do quick and/or easy workouts around the house. In the long run they are not as durable as solid-metal dumbbell sets (Keys Model # HDB or RHDB), but for light usage they are a good option.

You heard correctly! Just a little weight goes a long way. Dumbbells like you reviewed are so easy and portable.

I've heard lifting even light weights can be helpful to your bones too.

Great info on the review. We have some of these at our Y. Great for bone density.

I have some of these too. I have free weights all over the house. I think the color coordinates with the weight. I wanted purple ones but got green and navy ones. They're good but I do wish the middle wasn't so thick. My hands barely wrap around them.
