I did a lot of research before purchasing a vacuum.  Consumer reports rated this vacuum #1 it is the Kenmore Progressive Upright Vacuum with intell-clean system,slate blue. From the reviews I read most were very positive.  I purchased this vacuum in November and have had nothing but problems.  It gets clogged all the time..not with anything large just small dirt particles build up.  I have to take it apart after every cleaning and even then it does not suck like it should or did when I first plugged it in.

Is it possible that you bought a dud? I bought this model based on favorable reviews and, while it is heavy--weighing in at 20lbs--it cleans the floors very well. I'm concerned, though, about the fact that you need to use the attachments to clean the stairs b/c the motor shuts off when you place it back in the upright position.

I've had mine for about 6 years and always had wonderful results and no problems,except for the belt wearing out.You might try cleaning your beater-bar,you could be causing it to drag, with hair or string wrapped around it.
