Kenmore Elite Trio —

We have owned the Kenmore Elite Trio for less than three years.  While still under warranty we had problems with a mildew taste coming from the waterline.  They said it was the water filter and to replace it.  We did and it didn't help so I called back.  We were now a few days out of warranty therefore they wouldn't help.  Great service!  We have also had problems with the handles continuously loosening and a bin with a broken latch.  BUT the worst problem is occurring now.  Sometimes the interior light does not shut off and not only does it cause excessive heat (food loss) but it has also melted the interior surface and the brackets that hold the plastic protection cover in place.  The wiring is brown which indicates a potential for a fire!  I am learning that others have had this problem but Sears does not recognize this.

Here is the bottom line:  I am spending $250 to have them come out and repair it which includes a 1 year warranty.  That's all fine and good, HOWEVER if they cannot repair it they will give me $500 toward the purchase of a new one.  How generous!  I get $500 minus the $250 I've spent to warranty an unusable refrigerator.  I paid $1800 less than 3 years ago and now Sears will get the benefit of making money off me all over again.  Did I mention the $500 is only good at Sears?  Seems to me Sears has everything to gain and the consumer loses big time.  Why is it too much to ask for a manufacturer to stand behind their product... especially if it is a potential fire hazard???
