Kenmore Elite Energy Star Chest Freezer

I enjoy cooking and eating at home the majority of the time.  I live 30 minutes from a grocery store so in order to routinely crank out homemade meals, I have to be organized and I have to a lot of food in the freezer.

What is close by to our house are farms that offer organic, grass feed beef, chicken and turkey.  When we make a "farm run", we stock up on meats for about six months at a time.  We also use the freezer to store homegrown vegetables like okra, tomatoes and peppers.  When the weeding, watering and harvesting is all done, it's time for vegetable soup and chilli and what seemed like overkill in the summer is a welcome blessing from the freezer.  (Unfortunately I have yet to freeze any homegrown corn but the deer assure me that my corn is quite tasty but should be eaten on the spot and not frozen for later.)

In addition to meats and vegetables, we use our freezer for freezing zuchini breads, peach ice cream- all those treats that it seems silly to make jsut one batch of.

We choose a the Kenmore because Kenmore appliances have gained our trust and it is was a Energy Star appliance that should save us money on utilities in the long run verses a less efficient appliance.  (Keep this in mind for the "Cash for Refrigerators program that should begin mid November.  States will be offering $50 - $200 rebates for the purchase of energy efficient appliances.  Unlike the "Cash for Clunkers" programs, you don't have turn in your old appliance.)

Features of the Kenmore Elite Energy Star Chest Freezer:

This chest freezer has three wire baskets that lift out or slide from side to side to make it easier to separate, organize and find your frozen foods.

It supposedly holds 690 lbs. of frozen food.  I have not personally tested this theory.

It only comes in white.

If the temperature rises on your freezer because it gets unplugged, a storm knocks your power out or most likely, your husband is standing there holding the top up trying to decide what he wants to grill, an alarm will go off.  The alarm is very annoying yes.  If the power is out and there is nothing you can do about it, it will be annoying. If it gets your family to close the lid to the freezer quicker, it seems very helpful.

It has an easy to read, digital temperature reading on the top.

The lid is not exactly light and it is awkward to hold up while your looking.  I wish that it had one of those prop arms like the hood of a car.  Hey Kenmore, there's an innovative idea for you!

My Viewpoint:  If you need a chest freezer, the Kenmore Elite Chest Freezer has some great features and we've had zero maintenance problems with this Kenmore Energy Star appliance.

Zero maintenance is my favorite part - that and being able to not go to the store so much!
