Kelly's Heroes —

Kelly's Heroes (1970)

Engaging WWII caper flick starring Clint Eastwood, Don Rickles, Telly Savalas, and Donald Sutherland, our heroes plan to penetrate thirty miles behind the German lines to steal 16 million dollars in gold bars; 14,000 of them, to be exact.

Kelly (Eastwood) is a busted officer who decides to capture the gold and feather his own nest. To do that, he needs his own army, or at least a company or two. After lots of backlash from company First Sergeant Big Joe (Savalas), Kelly convinces him to lead the company during their three day R&R to steal the gold. There are lots of complications but getting through them is what makes it so fun.

The bridges have all been blown so he gets a bridging company to come along for a share in the ill gotten gains and a tank company under Sergeant Odd Ball (Sutherland) to give him an edge. But they are up against Tigers - much bigger and stronger tanks than American Shermans. See how the heroes deal with that little problem!

Don Rickles plays Sergeant Crap Game, the scrounger who can get anything for a price, and Carroll O'Connor plays the general who believes the heroes breakthrough is due to his leadership. The hilarity never ceases.

The script is full of laughs and all the actors play their parts well.

The Warner Bros DVD is presented in 2.35:1 theatrical format, in color, lasting iii minutes. The video and audio is perfectly preserved.

This is a film that will appeal to fans of The Dirty Dozen, Where Eagles Dare, or The Guns of Navarone.
