When it comes to feeding my pet birds and breeders, I approach nutrition for them the same as I do for our food and other pets.  I try to find the best diet available for them that is affodable, of course.  Parrots can be very picky eaters.  Sometimes they have a dislike for a certain color of food or texture just as other animals and humans do.  This makes it a little tricky in finding a seed mixture that all your birds will "like" and eat.

I purchase this seed mix in a 50 lb. bag at a local pet store that gives discounts to breeders.  This is one of the pet stores that I trust my babies to go to and be sold at.  They give them individual attention and get to have time out on the playstand during the day.

When I first opened a 50 lb. bag of this seed I was immediately impressed with the mixture. Not only does it have several different kinds of seeds (sunflower, safflower, milo) but there are also kernals of corn, oat groats, and several different pellets in the mix.  Sounds good so far...but wait--- there are also whole peanuts and almonds and dried red peppers!!  After seeing the quality of the nuts and the cleanliness of the seed mixture (no dust) I knew my fids (feathered kids) would love this stuff.  And I was right!

As mealtime approached and I gave Lucy (macaw) and Bo (african grey) their food, they both immediately spied the peanuts and almonds and started munching away. As I emptied the bowls the following day I noticed that there was very little wasted food. They liked the variety of seed, nuts and pellets this brand had to offer.  I also feed this to my larger breeders such as amazons, quakers and sometimes even to conures.  They love the variety!

What Didn't Impress Me!!

I can't help but mention these two topics as well.  We all strive for 100% natural and healthy ingredients in our pet's food.  This mix uses the preservative "Ethoxyquin".  Ethoxyquin is a preservative that is under question as to "how healthy" or not it really is for our pets.  It is commonly used as a preservative in pet foods and even some human foods.  The research has not been completed to show what kind of a long-term effect that this preservative could have on our pets or humans.

The second thing I wasn't jumping for joy to see on the label was "artificial coloring".  This is another item that could cause an allergic reaction for your pet.  It is not necessary and not needed, so why do they keep putting it the food?  Parrots commonly exclude a certain seed because it is green or red.  So why bother with dying seed?  Do they think parrots find green and red seed in the jungle in the wild?  Of course not!

Sizes Available

This mixture is mainly used by breeders and people with lots of birds. It comes in a 25# bag which I have purchased when the 50# is out of stock.  Seed can be stored in the freezer for several months to retain the freshness.  I pay around $40.00 for a 50 lb. sack which makes it much more affordable than buying the smaller size packages in the pet store.  Store a supply of seed that you will use in a week or two in an air-tight container and freeze the rest if you have the freezer space.  Great way to save on  bird seed!

Kaytee Products

Kaytee parrot food is readily available in most pet stores and some Walmart stores. (It's also cheaper in Walmart but they don't carry Supreme...only Fiesta!) It is a good mixture-whether you choose "Supreme" or "Fiesta" or another blend. They also make a baby bird handfeeding formula that I have used for years. Kaytee is also readily available to answer all your questions via their toll free line at 1-800-KAYTEE-1 or email customerservice @KAYTEE.com

Overall Recommendation

Kaytee is a company that has been around for years. They are very customer oriented and will be glad to answer any of your questions and/or concerns. I have used Kaytee products on and off for the last 20 years and will continue to use it.  I just wish they would use a natural citrus based preservative!

We tried a few different brands until our Cockatiels let us know which they preferred, always nice to see them eat most of it with very little waste! ;)
