I am an American living in China and shop frequently for plane tickets to come home.  In the past, I have always used Expedia to find the best prices, but recently I've used kayak.com to search for travel deals, and have been very pleased by the experience.

Kayak.com does not book plane tickets or hotel rooms itself, like Expedia and Orbitz do; instead, it allows the user to comparison-shop between a multitude of airlines or hotels, displaying the rates for all and then taking the customer to the website offering the tickets or room the customer wishes to book.  In other words, kayak.com is a huge search engine for travel deals--not a vendor.  While some people might find this two-step shopping a hassle, I think kayak.com is a fast, easy way to check prices and do some comparison-shopping between my favorite airlines.

The website's layout is spare and easy to use.   The first page asks for a minimum of information, such as travel dates and airports, which is then used to perform a general search for tickets.  The results page displays all ticket options available, and a function bar on the left side of the page enables the user to set preferences and filter out tickets by price or airline, simply by checking and un-checking boxes.  The customer can even set their preferred take-off and landing times, or decide on a maximum number of hours spent in airport layovers, by using sliding scales on the function bar.  If the user would like to know more about a particular flight, clicking the "details" link for that flight will bring up a box indicating its take-off and landing details, in addition to those of any stops along the way.  If basic information--such as travel dates or airports--needs to be changed, it can be done from a pop-up box on the results page, with no need to start the search over.  I have found that all of these functions make kayak.com much easier to use than Expedia.  However, in addition to searching airline sites, kayak.com also offers customers the option to comparison-shop with major discount travel sites such as Expedia, Travelocity, and Orbitz.  It's hard to imagine that a deal could slip through that net.

For anyone traveling to, from, or within the United States, I think kayak.com is an excellent starting point for planning a trip.  In my own experience, I have found that local travel agencies are able to find better prices for travel within Asia, but I am not sure if this is true in other parts of the world as well.  For its fast and easy interface, kayak.com is now my first stop whenever I need to find a good price on plane tickets or hotel rooms
