My boyfriend bought a (used) Kawasaki Vulcan 750 almost a year ago. It was his first bike purchase, and for that purpose it was great. It is a simple bike, not complex in its use or a million gadgets all over it like some touring bikes have. The design is great and the comfort of riding it is pleasurable for both the driver and the rider. We did have some mechanical issues over time though. While I know the age of the bike plays a factor, some things need mentioning.
There was a leak somewhere in the bike, causing it to smoke, which was always scary to have happen on the road. We think we found the source of the leak, and fixed it by putting a new hose on. After the leak came the issue of the bike turning itself off when you turned the wheel all the way to one side. We never figured out why it did that. The problem we are having with it now is that it simply wont start. We thought it was the battery, so we went and got it checked out and the battery is fine, so it has to be a wiring issue we can assume.
Overall, I can say that if you have the money to buy this bike in the years 1993-1997, it is a great first bike, and since its used, its ok if you lay it down in the learning to drive process. However, expect a lot of mechanical issues shortly down the road. My advice, go for a newer bike. Save a little longer and get that newer ride that will last longer and spend more time driving it and less time in the shop!
