Kashi - Go Lean Bars - All Flavors —

To the Point

I hadn't had a Kashi Go Lean Bar for years it seems. Then we went to a fair. Kashi had a booth promoting healthy eating. They gave us wonderful freebies along with a great tote bag. The Go Lean Bars we got were the Peanut Butter and Chocolate flavor. Kashi has several bars in their line. The ones they gave us are called Kashi Go Lean (As opposed to the crunchy or the roll bars.) In the past I had Kashi's cereal bar which I didn't like. The Peanut Butter and Chocolate were delicious.

A Closer View

The 2.75 ounce bar will cost you about $1.25. Other flavors in this line are Cookies and Cream, Malted Chocolate Crisp, and Oatmeal Raisin Cookie.

The Peanut Butter and Chocolate were covered with a thick layer of delicious milk chocolate. Some bars I've had that are covered in chocolate leave an aftertaste. My Kashi Go Lean bars didn't. They were chewy with a lot of peanut butter in the middle. They really were good.

They have 290 calories however they also have 13 grams of protein and 48 grams of carbohydrates. Those numbers tell me that this bar can be considered a meal replacement bar on occasion. It's better to eat real food but if you're in a hurry this will pick you up.

Unfortunately the bars have 31 grams of protein which is way too much to be considered healthy no matter what Kashi tells me. True there are no trans fats (6 grams of fat) in the bar and there are vitamins but they are negligible. In fact you are only getting 10& of your daily iron requirements and 8% of your calcium requirements.

I will list the ingredients for those who want to see them: Peanut Flour, Evaporated Cane Juice Syrup, Brown Rice Syrup, Kashi Seven Whole Grains and Sesame, Cereal [Corn, Wheat Bran, Evaporated Cane Juice, Corn Bran, Oat Fiber, Kashi Flour (Stone Ground Whole: Oats, Long Grain Brown Rice, Rye, Hard Red Winter Wheat, Triticale, Buckwheat, Barley, Sesame Seeds), Soy Protein GConcentrate, Salt, Annatto], Evaporated Cane Juice, Soy Protein Isolate, Nonfat Dry Milk, Honey, Barley Malt Syrup, Whey Protein Isolate, Fractionated Palm Kernel Oil, Chicory Root Fiber, Oat Fiber, Rolled Oats, Cocoa, Soy Lecithin, Salt, and Natural Flavors. (From http://www.kashi.com/products/golean_bars_peanut_butter_chocolate)

I'm not a nutritionist but I know that have cane juice syrup as the second ingredient is not good. There are some good ingredients such as brown rice syrup.

Jo's Viewpoint

I like it but I wouldn't buy this bar. It has far too much sugar for me. However I am rating it 4 stars because compared to other comparable bars Kashi Go Lean Peanut Butter and Chocolate is delicious and though not true healthy there's an attempt at healthy with the whole grains, sesame seeds and oats.

I've seen the commercials, and wondered what they might taste like. I don't like peanut butter and I'm not a big chocolate eater. If they have a version with fruit and nuts, maybe I'll give them a try.
