I wanted a prepaid phone for my daughters' 13th birthday, and after looking around, and seeing an ad in Good Housekeeping, went to Best Buy and bought a phone by Kajeet.  The surprise came after it was too late--a 35 cents a day charge, which you could only find out about at their website--not in the ad, not from the salesperson.  I was furious, but could not get a refund for the gift card of minutes I had bought, so kept the phone.  I still think their ads are deceptive, but the product itself has been fine.  The service has been reliable, no other rude surprises have come up, etc.  It works for us because there is no way for her to run up a big bill--if she uses up the money she has pre-paid, no more service... My next daughter is about to turn 13, and I'll shop around again.  My resentment over the initial advertising thing may prevent me from getting another Kajeet phone, but to be fair, it hasn't been a bad deal, and it offers lots of options for parents (restrictions on time it can be used etc.) that I don't need but are available to those who do.  They added some package deals on texting, which we needed, as my daughter likes to text, and her friends text her all the time, not understanding every one costs her 5 cents (just went up to 10 cents today, actually).  Good choice for parents of preteens, younger teens--just READ ALL THE FINE PRINT EVERYWHERE.
