Julius Echter Hefe- Weiss Premium —

It took some time this year for the weather to warm up but now that August is here, the temperatures have been steadily rising. It is during these hotter times of the year that many people turn to lighter beers for refreshment. One beer that is a little lighter than what I normally drink but certainly more flavorful than standard light beers is Julius Echter Hefe- Weiss Premium, a product from Germany.

Beer Commentary:

This beer looks very nice from the start, pouring to a golden/tan color with a somewhat cloudy body. The head of foam is comprised of tiny, tightly packed bubbles, giving the beer a creamy consistency. The aroma of this beer is very yeasty and a little biscuit- like.

This beer offers a taste that is very typical of other German hefeweizen products. The flavor is pronounced by yeast, but there is also some wheat flavor, a little clove, and a dash of fruit- a combination of banana and lemon. There are some herbal hops in the finish, but the taste remains dominated by yeast and light wheat. The alcoholic strength of this beer is 4.9 percent by volume.

This hefeweizen beer is, as expected, a yeast- accented brew. You can smell the yeast the moment you pop open a bottle and you can most certainly taste the yeast with each passing sip. But yeast isn't the only basic flavor present here. The strain of yeast the brewers use contributes other flavors common to this style, like clove, banana, and even a touch of bubble gum. And, of course, there is the presence of wheat flavor, making this beer very compatible with breakfast foods.

Yet another quality that many people will enjoy with this beer is its smoothness. Hefeweizen styles are known for their easy drinkability yet complex nature and Julius Echter Hefe- Weiss is no exception. The reduction in hop emphasis makes this beer more drinkable, smoother, and more easily digestible.

Bottom Line Viewpoint:

Overall, Julius Echter is a very good tasting hefeweizen brew with an authentic German taste and easy- drinking complexity. The combination of flavors make it a great choice of beer to drink with food or all by itself, for some quick refreshment during the dog days of summer.
