As we await an expensive 3D remake of Jules Verne's classic tale...I look back at the 1959 film--a big hit in its day.

James Mason is one of those fascinatingly charismatic actors who makes almost any film he is in worth watching. I'll forever picture him as the sophisticated heavy Phillip Vandamm in Hitchcock's NORTH BY NORTHWEST (also in 1959); as Norman Maine to Judy Garland's Vicki Lester in 1954's A STAR IS BORN, and as Captain Nemo in 20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA (also 1954). Journey, was one of the best movies in it's genre at the time...

a movie buff

Journey to the center of the earth 1959 still rates higher in my opinion than the modern version....the new one centers on the cinema effects where as the original centered on the plot and used the effect to carry the plot line and make it believeable...

It showed a diverse group of people who had to learn to get along to survive...it taught a lesson but gave you a sense of wonder and imagination that is lost in todays movies.

deffinatly a movie to own for your collection.
