It seems that we all lead such busy lifestyles, and I know that very rarely do I have the time or even a pen handy to "jot" down all the details, thoughts and things to do that I need to throughout the course of the day. I recently discovered a way to "jott" down everything without need for pen or paper. Jott.com is an on-line web service that can write my to do list down for me, send me an email reminder of things to do and even calendar events to write down, it allows me to dictate writing ideas and get them transcribed in written form within minutes as well as text and voice message friends, family and business contacts.

How does Jott.com work?

First you register your cell phone number with the Jott.com website. Next you click a confirmation email message, that allows you to confirm you want to use this service. After your confirmation email, you then call their 1-866 number from your phone and complete a short tutorial and introduction to the service. You then create a contact list with telephone numbers and email addresses.

What are some of the services Jott.com provides?

  • Text message friends and family without having to type your message in: Simply call your jott number and state who you wish to "jott."  Then state your message. They will receive a text message from you.
  • Create a "to do" list:  You can call yourself and create your own to do list.  You can then access the list from your email or from the jott.com website.
  • Dictation transcription: If you are a busy professional, you will love this feature.  You can leave a meeting and call yourself, leaving a message of all the items you need to address as a result of the meeting. When you return to the office your email message will be there waiting for you. You can also set it to go directly to your assistant.

What are some special features of Jott.com?

First, Jott.com is free. There is no charge for the service and no charge to set up your account.  Your information is kept private and it is not sold for marketing purposes. Some of the other special features is the ability to set reminders for tasks that need completed or places you need to be. You can create a group or individual contact list.  You can also create different lists, such as a personal to do list, work to do list or social to do list, keeping yourself organized as well as not feeling overwhelmed but having it all in one spot that you can easily access from the web.

My Viewpoint:  I love the text-ing feature, it is the one I use most often.  My Motorola Razr phone is just what I wanted when I purchased it, but it was not designed for text-ing.  However, with Jott, I can call the number and text my husband or friends with the time I will be meeting, or even a honey do list. Another function I use regularly is the ability to create a to do list.  My mind is random, and I think of things at the strangest times, so now whenever that random thought occurs -- like don't forget to write a check for your daughter's lunch money, I call myself and send myself an email message. Since the checkbook is at my desk with the computer I am able to be that much more organized. The dictation transcription is useful to me as a writer, since I may think of a topic, article or something to research at any point and I can call myself and leave myself a message as well as even dictate much of my thoughts starting the "pre-writing" process without needing a keyboard. Then I copy/paste it into WORD and start working. The reminders almost keep me on time (I am chronically late).  I can call from the doctors office and set a reminder for my next appointment, getting a note and alarm to remind me to attend it. I love this service, it is absolutely the best virtual assistant I could ever have and keeps this busy person that much more organized.  Now, if only I could find a service to organize the pile of papers on my desk!

In response to vivasuzi's comment from May 22, 2008 at 8:45PM:

Mine did too, and now that I can't voice note myself my appointments I HAD to find someother way to keep myself organized.!

Very interesting! My old Cell had a voice-note feature on it that I used all the time, I miss that! As far as text-msging, I wouldn't use that feature since usually when I text it's because I can't talk on the phone. Nice review, I may check it out for the note feature.

Hi, Lisa! Better late than never! I'm glad I was able to tell you how much I loved this review. See you all when I get back from California. I'm waiting for the taxi to pick me up now to take me to O'Hare for the trip.
