Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell may not be for everyone; it's a lovely, well-crafted, 'alternate hstory' type of fantasy novel with extraordinary prinary, secondary, and tertiary characters, who al have 'an independant' existence. It has often been compared to Jane Austen's books, but I find it more similar too Chares Dickens's - sans joycian dialect.

The plotline may seem to some readers to be occasionally evasive; I did not find it so. All characters are well portrayed, and there aren't so many that keeping track of them would feel like reading a phone book. It is a long work, and by no means amenable to cinema format, so you will just have to read it, to enjoy it.
