As Jon Peter Lewis told me in a recent interview, he's the proud owner of many "firsts" as an American Idol graduate. He was the first to pull off a performance-driven song on American Idol with A Little Less Conversation, leading the way for performers such as Taylor Hicks, and after his time on Idol, he was the first to release an album independently. He'll soon be out with his second album, and though it will still be an indie, it's being released with much more fanfare.

We'll have to wait a few months before we get to hear all of the new album, as it will be released June 3rd, but until then, we have the title track off the album, Break the Silence, to sample.

While Jon's first album, Stories From Hollywood was just that, a collection of songs that reflected on Jon's first few years post Idol, this upcoming album he finds much more relationship-based and less "I'm alone and life sucks." While it didn't set out to have a theme, he realizes the name certainly makes it seem like it does. Jon's diehard fans certainly dot feel as if a silence needs to be broken, but there are probably some American Idol enthusiasts that never caught his Freshman album and don't realize-what he's been up to since then.

Break the Silence
, the single, has less of an independent feel and certainly seems more mainstream. As promised, the song definitely speaks more of a relationship and yearning for more. If we were to play American Idol with it, Randy would be telling "Dawg" that he could see the song being released today and making it as a hit record, and Paula would be telling Jon she enjoyed the way she could hear his emotions coming out in the song. Simon would be telling him it was his best so far and that he actually kind of liked it.

All of those critiques would in fact be correct. It definitely has the feel of a hit and is one of Jon's best to date. One of Jon's hallmarks has always been the way he could pour himself into a song, and that seems to be something he hasn't lost in his efforts to have his music released more mainstream.

Break the Silence has me yearning for more. I want to hear the rest of the album, although I'm sure it will be just as good as the new single. Maybe we'll even have another first, the first to release an independent album, then come back with an even more successful second attempt.
