Joico Color Endure Violet Shampoo —

Joice Color Endure Violet Violet Shampoo is product that works, if you're willing to spend the extra money.  The shampoo is designed for blonde and silver/grey hair to help reduce dullness and brassiness that can occur on natural or color treated hair.  This is done by using a shampoo with a temporary violet pigament that helps neutralize the yellow tones in the hair.

At first, I was a bit alarmed because the shampoo wasn't just a little purple, but really purple.  The color of purple food coloring.  It has a thinner consistency then most shampoos, but it was not hard to apply in any way.  You apply, lather, and let it sit for five minutes.  I used this time to just relax in the steam or exfoliate.  Since the shampoo is thinner then most, take a bit of caution when applying it...I've found that if any gets on the shower walls or shower curtain, it will leave a temporary stain.  It comes off with no problem with a little bit of water and rubbing.

Some products you can cut the corners with and not keep on the full amount of time, but for this, I suggest leaving it on the full five minutes.  That lets it really saturate your hair and work it's magic.  After the five minutes, rinse and finish with the complimenting violet conditioner.  The shampoo says it can be repeated after rinsing, but I've personally never tried that method.  A word of caution...the violet shampoo should not be used everyday.  Constantly applying the shampoo with the purple pigment to hair--especially lighter shades--can cause the color deposits build up and leave hair with a slight purplish/blue cast to it.  If this happens, no wories, as it will come out with a wash with regular shampoo.  I would also suggest to not use the shampoo daily as my hair feels a little drier then normal after using it, even when used with the conditioner and a leave in treatment.

I was only recently informed about violet shampoos by my stylist, but I wish I had none a long time ago!  When I use it regularly, combined with a good shampoo and conditioner designed for color treated hair, I find that it does make my hair look better.  Obviously, it hasn't stopped the beginnings of roots from developing, but it does make my hair look shinier and even better, more brassy.  I wouldn't say it makes my hair look straight from the salon blonde, but it looks better then using just a regular shampoo.  I'm willing to alternate this in a few times a week to improve my color.  I have very hard water and using this shampoo has definitely helped protect my hair from the damage hard water can cause.  I don't see this shampoo stretching out the time between appointments from seeing my stylist, but I do think it will help maintain the salon color.  I've been highlighting my hair various shades of blonde since I was a freshmen in high school and now, 10 years later, using this shampoo it looks less brassy then any other time I've had it highlighted--and I last had my highlights done 2 months ago.  Usually by this point, I'm starting to count the days until I'm getting them redone to get the brassiness out.  Not as much now.

You won't find this shampoo in Target or Wal Mart.  It's a salon brand, so you'll either find it a salon or salon product store.  I purchased it at Ulta and it came packaged with the Color Endure Violet Conditioner for about $25.  To me, it was a reasonable price for a salon product.  I read many reviews online about the best violet shampoos to by and Joico had very positive reviews for the effect it had and the ingredients used.  Ulta had a wide variety of violet shampoos and despite the allegiance I usually have to Redken and Bedhead products, this stuck out as the best option.

In the end, the product does work.  Plain and simple.  If you use it, you will get the benefits of it.  However, you have to commit to the price of it.  It's not as cheap as a Pantene or Clairol shampoo, but the quality of the product is higher.  Save your pennies and buy the product that actually is going to help your color, enhane the quality of it, and make you enjoy your color more.

--PROS--

  • Shampoo does work and show results within the first few uses.
  • Can be used 3-4 times a week.
  • Violet tones WILL cancel out yellow tones to produce the color you want.
  • Reduces brassiness in blonde, grey, and silver hair colors.
  • Works on natural haircolor or color treated hair.

--CONS--

  • The shampoo is more expensive the your typical drugstore shampoo.  Its about twice as expensive as a typical brand that is not on sale.
  • It is not a stand alone product; it works much better when used with the complimenting conditioner and other products.
  • It isn't as easy to locate.  You may to order it from a salon, buy from a salon supply store, or online.
  • The shampoo can leave very minor staining on surfaces if not cleaned up quickly (however, the do come off with water and rubbing a towel).
