Johnsonville Beer Brats are a summer staple for me

I don't cook much at all, but come summertime I do like to try my hand at grilling.  Being a Midwesterner I love a good brat and my go to is the Johnsonville Beer Brat.  This brat has a mildly spicy flavor with a hint of beer and cooks up deliciously soft with a slightly tough skin.  You should be able to find these brats in your local grocer's frozen meats section.

Since they come frozen, I like to simmer the brats in a good strong pilsner or IPA to impart even more beer flavor before grilling them.  You also don't want to throw a frozen brat on the grill!  BTW, "beer boiled brats" is a misnomer, you don't want to actually boil them, as you run the risk of exploding the skins.  Also you don't need to grill brats on the hottest settings for the same reason...you don't want to pop the skins...wait for your coals to ash over and turn often for a consistent brown on all sides of the sausage.

I serve my brats butterflied on a thick rye bread topped with sauerkraut (unsweetened, of course!) and some spicy dark mustard.  Wash down with a cold beer and you have the perfect summertime meal.

I suggest that you try to get a package of Usingers or Boars Head Brats and soak them overnight in Guiness....I think you will find that it blows Johnsonville out of the water or off the grill...you can even mix in a couple of tablespoons of your Guiness marinade with the kraut...

Man that brats and sauerkraut sound delish! I love that, too. :>

Actually, you led me into temptation (-: I'm pretty sure brats are not on that sheet of what I'm supposed to eat. But, boy are they good.

@MikeMaroon -- sounds like a ton of fun, especially with good food, and I have to imagine good beer too, at the end of the hike. Thanks for the explanation.

It is, or was the national pastime in Germany. (I was there in the mid-80's). Every weekend, all across the country these Volksmarching events are held. There is a national organization you can register with and keep records of all your marches. They typically were 5, 10, and 15 Kilometers long. Go to the place, register and follow the trails and signs, which take you through little towns and the woods. At the end, there was usually some little medal or patch you earned. They were part of the entry fee, then it was 6 German marks. (of course, they were replaced by the Euro) You also earned rewards after 50 marches and 100k walked. There were old people walking those things with patches completely covering their jackets. I loved going on those things. Several of us from work would get together just about every weekend and go.

@LisaCarey -- I'm a lazy cook (or maybe unimaginative) so I didn't do the grilled onions and peppers, but that does sound mighty tasty to me. Maybe I'll try that next time. Thanks for stopping by!

@MikeMaroon -- sounds great. Can you translate volksmarching for me? I'm not familiar with the term.

Yep, exactly the way that I make them too, and you can add some peppers and onions on the grill . . top it off with your choice of mustard. But then again, I am from the south :-)

I love brats. Got turned on to them while living and volksmarching in in Germany. They typically served them at the end of the hike and I LOVED them. Great, now I'm hungry!! Thanks!!! ;)

Stomach is growling now. We need a grill on the roof here at the office.
