Let me preface this with the fact that I have fine straight dark brown hair.  Perhaps this product is better suited to other hair types, but there's no notice of it on the manufacturer's package.  With that said, here's my review of this product.

As summer fades into winter, the reddish highlights from the summer sun loose their appeal and at my age a few grays are sneaking in around the hairline. So as my late September wedding approached and I sought out all the perfect products to make me feel and look as beautiful as possible, I purchased the John Freida Brilliant Brunette Luminous Color Glaze. What a great name. Geez, what else do they need to say to make a 40-something brunette want to buy their product?

Application of the product is as easy as it comes. Wash and condition hair as usual, then apply product and leave in hair for 2 to 3 minutes, then rinse thoroughly. For me, this is all done in the shower and was simple to add to my normal routine.

Once out of the shower, I comb and dry my hair as usual - and it definitely looks darker. All the gray isn't covered, so it could potentially look natural - but it looks dull and lifeless. And it doesn't stop there. My hair felt very waxy and hung as if there was a heavy coating on it. When I touched my hair during the day, my fingers and hands were slippery and shiny from whatever was coating my hair. Yuck! Not to mention the strong odor. And none of this went away until i shampooed my hair the following day. As a matter of fact, it took two shampoos to get the odor and the waxy build up out of my hair.

So by Day 3 or 4, my hair was back to its natural odor and feel and looking good, still darker. This is a temporary color, so the color fades with each shampoo as well. For me the color effect is gone by Day 6 or 7.

I bought the full bottle, so I've tried using this product several times. Each time switching things up a bit trying to make it work properly for my hair - tried it with conditioner, without conditioner, before shampooing, after shampooing, letting my hair dry naturally, completely drying with hair dryer. The results are always the same.

For me, this product was a total waste of my money and I can not recommend that anyone else use it.

Here's a hint for other brunettes out there tempted to try a product with a luscious name like this one. If you're looking to temporarily deepen the darkness of your tresses, use coffee. The application isn't as easy as the one above, but it scores higher in every other aspect. First of all, if it is leftovers from the morning brew, the cost is zero - so if the hair color doesn't please you, at least your wallet isn't lighter. So here's exactly what I've done in the past. First, take the morning's leftover coffee and pour it over your hair, completely soaking your hair. Then put on a shower cap (the freebie from your last hotel stay) or some sort of equivalent. Then go sit in the sun and let the sun bake the color in. I guess the heat of a hair dryer would have the same result, but I haven't tried that. Then dry and style your hair as usual. This treatment is temporary and the color begins to fade as soon as you begin washing your hair. Don't expect the deep color to last more than a few days. And before the first wash, it does have the fragrance of coffee - but it is not as strong or offensive as the John Freida product.

While the coffee version doesn't have the great name and zero marketing appeal, it works better on my hair.  So don't be fooled like I was into trying this, unless someone like me offers you their leftover bottle to try.  By the way, I've got plenty left if you want to show me that it works better for your hair type.

Like you the woman of forty something, I too have tried the temporary solutions.(Not a big fan of dying my hair) I use the John Frieda and like it, but don't use all over. I do however like the idea of Java and will try it for a cheaper fix. Thanks for the advice, it would save me money and who wouldn't like that right?

I have tried the java idea and I have seen the difference and at a much better price. I have to agree on the smell of this product...I won't use it just because of the smell. Good review!

Great review, thanks for the warning. I have pretty dark hair (some people think it's black but it's not) and have tried products like this to enhance it. Good to know this is a dud... although if you want to pay the shipping I'll try it ;)

In response to BayouBengal's comment from Jan 3, 2008 at 8:11AM:

Thank you for your supportive comments and compliments on my wedding photos. I've got many more I could share. Our wedding videographers are using clips from our wedding as samples, if you'd like to see them go to http://zmfstudios.com/movie_steve_karen.html It was everything it was supposed to be, so we share with anyone who's willing. Thanks again!

Nice job! I find that the odor of these products are not near as bad as they were 10 years ago!
