Paul Giamatti stars as John Adams and Laura Linney portrays Abigail -- his wife of 54 years. Character actor Tom Wilkinson...
review »Being a history geek, as my teenage son calls me, I read John Adams soon after it came out, so I was really excited when I saw that HBO films had made a mini-series out of it. I am happy to say that I was not disappointed in what they did in bringing the story to the screen. It was true to the book and historically accurate. At the same time, it was full of passion, both in portraying John Adams' love for his new country, as well as his lifelong love for his wife.
As impressed as I was with HBO's portrayal of John Adams and his fellow patriots' fiery personalities, I was equally impressed...
review »Even as much as I enjoy reading and learning about American history, I've always had a tendency to favor eras which are closer to the 20th and 21st Centuries to, obviously, the detriment of other time periods, such as Colonial and post-Revolutionary War America.
Part of the blame for this falls on the way in which American history has been traditionally presented in most classrooms even since before I attended public schools here in the 1970s and '80s. We students were often given very generalized overviews of Important Events and given lists of Great Names and/or Important Concepts to memorize...
review »This mini series was absolutely outstanding. It provides a realistic view of what our founding fathers endured both personally and politically. Many Americans have a "romantic" idea of life at the time of our independence, however this series educates the viewer about the hardships endured by those willing to dedicate their lives for the creation of America.
Every American should watch this series to appreciate the reality of the sacrifices made by our founding fathers. It will provide the viewer a new respect for those who came before us and were willing to fight for what was right at...
review »I really enjoyed this mini-series. It gave you a humanistic look into the making of this country. We hold these men up as icons, and don't see them as humans with goals and desires as portayed on this series. I really liked all the characters and thought that they were very well cast. I am anticipating the DVD. I think I would like this for my collection.
The miniseries John Adams recently concluded its seven-episode run on HBO, and it will be missed. The miniseries, based on the biography by David McCulloch, starred Paul Giamatti in the titular role and Laura Linney as Abigail Adams.
The storyline, though familiar from history lessons, was intriguing, as it showed a different perspective on the events of America's fight for independence from England. Until McCulloch's book, John Adams and his contributions to the formation of our nation were largely ignored and overshadowed by those of his contemporaries. Though John Adams highlights these...
review »I am a history buff, and am a big fan of the American Revolution. Not to mention I am also a fan of McCullough's work and loved seeing one of his great works become a miniseries! I had to tape this series because it was soooo good!
I cannot wait for the DVD set. I NEED IT!
I recorded the series on my DVR. When I found time to watch it I found myself watching multiple episodes at once because I was so impressed with the overall production level, cast, sets and story telling.
I enjoyed every episode and I'm thrilled that HBO dedicated this much time and effort to this project.
Once I saw the previews, I knew it was going to be something special. It did not disappoint. I am a big history buff and this was stunningly accurate. I highly reccommend!
Simply one of the best miniseries I have ever ever seen.
