I received the Deceptively Delicious cookbook for my birthday last year and have used it consistently ever since.  Jessica Seinfeld's "simple secrets to get your kids eating good food" work exceptionally well on my husband.  The recipes are easy to make and leave me feeling like I am doing something good for my family.

The whole premise of the Deceptively Delicious cookbook is to "hide" pureed fruits and veggies in everyday foods without your kids (or spouse) having any clue.  This is a great way to get in your daily allotment of fruits and veggies while eating foods you actually like.  You get the benefits of vitamins and antioxidants without the taste.  The Deceptively Delicious cookbook explains how to puree, freeze, and use your produce.  It even explains the health benefits of many common fruits and veggies.  For the most part, you can't even tell that the food you have always loved is now infused with fruits or veggies.

Here are just some of my favorites (with the hidden ingredients)...

  • Italian Meatloaf (carrots)
  • Mozzarella Sticks (cauliflower)
  • Macaroni and Cheese (butternut squash and cauliflower)
  • Spaghetti Pie (broccoli and carrot)
  • Sloppy Joes (sweet potato, butternut squash and red pepper)
  • Turkey Chili (red pepper and carrot)
  • Brownies (carrot and spinach)
  • Blueberry Oatmeal Bars (spinach)
  • Chocolate Chip Cookies (chickpeas)
  • Chocolate Cake (beets)

I was very hard-pressed to narrow the list down to my 10 favorites.  The recipes are THAT good!  The cookbook also has helpful hints and facts throughout.  For example, I knew that you were supposed to steam or saute veggies, but I didn't know that it was because too much water leaches the "good stuff" like vitamins right out.  At the back of the cookbook, you'll find a very helpful guide explaining the ins and outs of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.

I have found the Deceptively Delicious cookbook to be an invaluable guide to healthy eating.  You can find this cookbook just about anywhere cookbooks are sold for the list price of $24.95.  I recommend this cookbook to everyone, whether or not you have a picky eater in your household.  It is truly a great resource.

That must have been rough! You must be really sick of chicken :)

This is a true story - for one whole year my youngest daughter, now 28, would only eat chicken. It's a good thing hubby was on sabbatical. I bought a cook book called 365 ways to make chicken:) Nice job...
