To the Point

I realize that many really love this car. That's why we have different views!

I was excited to rent a 2007 Jeep Patriot while in San Francisco. It was a 2007 with only 11,000 miles on it.

A Closer View

The Jeep Patriot that we drove will cost you around $13,000, It is an SUV. Ours had a 2.4 liter, 4 cylinder engine. It was automatic and 4 x 4.

Some of the standard features (and this was the base model i.e. nothing was added except the automatic - manual is standard) include a rear split second seat and regular unleaded gas.

It gets 23 miles to the gallon in the city and 26 miles to a gallon on the highway.

The Jeep Patriot was roomy and we would have been comfortable except that the seats were so uncomfortable our backs hurt us after 20 minutes of driving.

Since the Jeep is an SUV we got a lot of room for our luggage - 23 cubic feet (compare this to the roomy 16 cubic feet the Grand Prix has)

The Pros

  • The Jeep looks attractive.
  • The breaks were terrific. We almost hit a car and were able to stop short and avoid an accident.

The Cons

  • After 30 miles per hour it was ridiculously noisy. I thought a window was open the entire time drove this car.
  • Route 1 outside San Francisco winds a lot! I felt car sick- at this point a passenger. I couldn't have handled driving the Jeep Patriot on this winding road with few barriers. The side to side motion was terrible. My body was literally sore! In other words it didn't hug the road. Perhaps that's true of SUV's but I own a Toyota 4 Runner and don't feel this way in it.
  • The phone charger didn't work.
  • I wouldn't expect a 2.4liter , 4 cyclinder engine to be quick but the pick up was really pathetic.

From www.edmunds.com regarding the safety of the 2007 Jeep Patriot the crash results are impressive with 5 stars for the passenger, side front and rear impact and 4 stars for the driver and rollover.

Jo's Viewpoint

We had the 2007 Jeep Patriot for 5 days. For the right price if we weren't on windy roads I would rent it again and for a young person the price is right. Still in terms of my recommendation and the possibility of my buying a Jeep Patriot I am not recommending this car and am giving it a low rating.

Thanks for the warning. This definitely won't be on my car-rental list.

I do get motion sick very easily, so I will avoid this like the plague! Nice review. :)

Once upon a time we were going to get the Grand Cherokee but went with the Caravans for many years. I think they are very different! Jo

We own a Jeep Grand Cherokee which is like driving a Cadiliac as far as 4WD's go. The Patriot must be a real cheepie.

My oldest son drove Jeeps for years before giving them up. He likes to hunt though and it fit that need. Many a Jeep used to have a saying written across the window that said, "It's a Jeep thing; you wouldn't understand!" I agree that many of us don't understand. :)
Now, many Jeep windows say, [in upside down writing] "If you can read this, turn me over!"

Ouch the thought gives me a head ache

Too bad it's uncomfortable. Jeeps are often taken off-road, so it would be even more uncomfortable on rough roads!
