Jack Daniel's Old #7 Brand —

I first started drinking Jack Daniel's about 30 years ago, I have tried other whiskeys but Jack is my favorite of them all. I took a tour of the distillery almost 4 years ago and loved it. I did buy a special bottle of Jack while I was there. It was #1 of a 4 bottle set and has a embossed statue of Jack Daniels himself. You can only buy the special series bottles from the distillery or a duty free store at an international airport. I only have the first one, but I have seen the 4 bottle set on ebay for about $1200.

The distillery

Set in the mountains of Lynchburg,Tennessee the distillery is quite an adventure for the curious at heart. From the Statue of Jack Daniels to the spring from which this whiskey is made it is a lesson in the history of this sour mash. They have 7 warehouses full of aging whiskey with enough alcohol to burn everything within 5 miles. The tour is a great way to learn the distilling process from start to finish. I would have liked to of had a sample of Jack while I was there but believe it or not the distillery is in a dry county! Which means no alcohol can be consumed there. Kind of ironic but very true Jack Daniels is made there but you can't drink it there.

If you never smelled a vat of sour mash you are not missing anything...lol It will turn your stomach and burn your nose. After it leaves the vats and goes to filtering the fumes are so strong they padlock the lids down so people will not open them (you walk right beside them)

The other amazing fact many people don't know is that the charcoal that is used to filter Jack Daniels is made on site. Yes they make their own out of Sugar Maple and it is quite impressive how they go through all that trouble for a whiskey.

The Taste

I am not an expert by any means, I couldn't tell you in technical terms what the flavor is. I do know that although strong and taking some getting used to that sour mash has a smooth yet strong bite. It is great mixed with cola (pepsi for me) and I have on rare occasions drank it straight. To me it has almost a smoky flavor to it with and a slight woody flavor.

It is great in BBQ sauces and I have used it in marinades before for everything from chicken to whole pork shoulder. I have added it to baked beans and used it in glazes as well. The alcohol cooks out but leaves a fantastic taste to everything. I made a beef brisket this past 4th of July with Jack in the BBQ sauce and it was moist and tender. I smoked it for about 8 hours, it was 11 pounds. That brisket was gone in less than 45 minutes and we only had 12 people there!

Bottom Line

My little brother loved Jack as well and the bottle I bought from the distillery sits on my mantle next to his picture. I visited the distillery on the way back from scattering my brothers ashes and I went there in hopes of buying a special bottle. That bottle will never be opened as it was in his memory that I bought it. But I also have a bottle in the house for myself and guests to enjoy. Jack Daniels is made with loving care, so much that each and every batch is approved by the Master Distiller. The distillery was founded in 1866 and to this date has had only 6 Master Distillers. It is made with spring water that flows through the distillery grounds and is then filtered.

Jack Daniels famous whiskey is also found in hot sauces, BBQ sauce, candy and even wood chips for smoking meat. For a price you can purchase an entire barrel and have the label customized with your name. Also those buying a single barrel have their name engraved on a plaque and put on the wall at the distillery. The wall is an amazing site and contains the names of every one that has purchased a single barrel.

Each barrel makes roughly about 240 bottles of Jack Daniels, which will set you back between $8400 and $9600. You can also go there and personally pick you barrel out, or the Master Distiller will choose one for you. When a Single Barrel is bottled it is the only barrel on the line at that time and is bottled in a special bottle and distinct label for that purchaser. Then it is packed and shipped to your local (you choose) liquor store with your name on it for pickup.
