JVC - AV27WF36 Television —

Before my ex and I broke up a couple of months back, we had lived together for almost two years.  When we first moved in together, we had a lot of help in terms of acquiring the essentials.  However, we were stuck with a pair of 13 inch TVs, not exactly the best when hosting company.  For that first Christmas, we asked for a larger TV for our living room.  We ended up with money to put towards one, which worked out well, since it enabled us to pick out exactly what we wanted.

We headed to Best Buy in search of something along the lines of a 27 inch flat tube. Sure, we'd have loved to have a plasma or LCD HDTV, but well, it just ain't happening. Not now anyways. Besides that, flat tubes are so cheap nowadays anyway that it was certainly the most cost conscious choice.

We ended up with a 27 inch JVC, model number JVC AV27WF36. We were impressed with this model's superior picture quality in comparison to the 27 inch Sharp flat tube we were originally looking at. At $269.99, it was a little bit more expensive than the Sharp, but the superior picture quality sealed the deal.

Obviously, picture quality is a huge factor in making a television purchase, and this TV has very good (just short of excellent) picture quality. The colors are crisp and vibrant, and unlike the Sharp model we saw, there didn't seem to be problems with the tinting or brightness. It's especially noticable with some of the animated fare that I like to watch (i.e. Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Family Guy). There is also a noticeable difference in the quality of picture when I pop in a DVD. The flat screen I'm sure only helps these characteristics, and the size of the screen is very good, especially considering the size of my living room.

Just as solid as the picture quality is the audio quality. The stereo sound is very good, although due to my DirecTV hookup, it can be necessary to turn the TV up to a higher than normal volume, depending on the channel. Needless to say though, compared to our old 13 incher, this TV has brought many a movie to life (hello Sin City!). I wasn't sure what to expect for built in stereo sound, but this was a nice surprise that certainly surpassed my expectations.

The TV comes with 4 AV inputs, meaning hooking up a VCR, DVD player, and Playstation 2 was no sweat, at least for the most part. As I'm electronically ignorant, I had some trouble getting both the DVD and the Playstation to work, so I had to move them around a bit, but eventually, they worked just fine. There are 3 inputs in back and 1 in front. There are also outputs for expanded audio options.

The remote that came with the TV is obsolete outside of getting us to the proper AV input that we need, since we have DirecTV. It doesn't appear to be able to work a DVD player, meaning at the very least, you'd have to have 2 remotes around at all times. This could be annoying for those who want one remote to work everything they have. However, setup was basically painless. DirecTV took care of the biggest headaches automatically.

The only real drawback to this TV is it's size. It is a very large TV, weighing in at close to 95 pounds. It's also almost 30 inches wide and 24 inches high, so you'll need two people to lift it. And if you're going up a flight of stairs? Forget about it, pay the extra delivery cost, you'll be happy you did. I know I wish I did.

All in all, I'm very pleased with this TV about 16 months later.  Considering what I paid, I don't know if I could've gotten better picture or sound for the price, and the biggest headache was getting it in the house in the first place. So if your TV has died, and you're in the market for a nice, affordable flat tube, the JVC AV27WF36 would be a solid all around choice.
