My 8.5 year old son has gone to JCC Apachi Chicago Day Camp Chicago for the last five years. My 6.5 year old son has been for the last three years. The bus picks them up at 8:30 at our house and drops them off around 4:00pm every day. The 4 year ' finish camp at 1:00pm and drop them off at 2:00pm. We were lucky to have the bus stop right in front of our house. Some families have to walk to a bus stop. As parents we have been very happy with the camp. It is organized, spirited, and overall lots of fun. We have gotten to know the camp director, Andrea and have great respect for her.
We would recommend this camp to any one (Jewish or not) who is looking for good day camps experience. The camp is situated at UIC which has several collegiate size athletics fields, basket ball courts, Olympic size pools and gyms. All with a view of the Chicago skyline!
But, enough of what the parents think. Here are some quotes from my boys:
They have very good lifeguards.
They have all different kids of things that all kids would like. All the kids like some of the sports.
They have good coaches for basketball, soccer and other sports.
If you forget your lunch they will make you a cheese sandwich.
They have very good pizza and very good hot dogs. On Wednesday and Fridays.
The pizza is really good. (I already said that! No you didn't! Yes I did!) anyway....
They sell lanyards for free. I worked on mine all summer and in someone in explorer K took it. (allegedly says the dad)
The kids can have as much fun as they want making really fun stuff.
Swimming is very, very, very fun. The deep end is 16 feet and I am not kidding. The diving board is say, maybe 9 feet. And.... level 1,2, and 3 at free swim for the two last days can only go in the shallow ends. 4,5 and 6 can go in the deep end for free swim on the last two days. Swimming is very, very, very fun.
A lot of counselors will be your friend at camp. They do stuff with you and will have fun with you. They will take you to your classes and play with you there. My counselor, Lou, played baseball with us every single time. When he hit a home-run everyone started laughing.

JCC's long-awaited city day camp puts all the fun of summer under one incredible roof at the University of Illinois-Chicago! This sensational program brings the quality, tradition and Jewish spirit of JCC's premier north suburban day camp to the city. The program for children 4 years old through 6th grade features daily Red Cross swimming, tennis, team sports, art, music, drama, dance, gymnastics, science, martial arts, field trips, cookouts, special events, Shabbat celebrations and JCC's popular "wild card" surprise entertainment. Bus service within designated boundaries is included. New this summer is Apachi Chicago Sports -- an all-action sports program for 2nd-6th graders.
