J. K. Rowling - Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone Review Summary

This is the one that started it all. In 1998 a then unknown author, J.K. Rowling released Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, revolutionizing the literary world and making obsessive readers out of millions of people, young and old. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone "is a truly wonderful novel, and as an introduction to the world of magic and Harry Potter"according to all who have read it. Harry Potter was born as an idea in Rowling's head while riding a train, but in this novel, his fate is to be born the child of wizard parents who die protecting him from the evil dark wizard, Lord Voldemort. He is sent to live with his muggle relatives (if you don't know what a "muggle" is, read the book) and his ancestry is hidden from him until his eleventh birthday. Then a letter containing an invitation begins Harry's magical journey. "This first book will open the door to any child's mind and allow them to escape to a whole new realm of possibilities and imagination." and, according to reviewers, likely make you a Potter addict.

The Case

I was in high school when Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone was released. And I was a bookworm, too. For all intents and purposes, I should have been able to say that I was a Potter fan from the very beginning. But I can't say that, because I didn't read it. The first - and main reason - for this is that I grew up in a strict Christian household that, sadly, scorned the books as 'evil' (which couldn't be farther from the truth); the second is that I was much more into sci-fi as a teenager than any other genre, and, to be perfectly frank, the idea of a boy wizard really didn't appeal...

I remember the very first day I picked up Harry Potter.  Reading this book took me on a journey that I will never forget.  Harry Potter made history, and we were able to witness it happen.  JK Rowling is a master of spinning tales that are not only amusing, but have deep and rooting plot twists.  Each character is so well developed that every time you re-read a book you learn something new.  That is the mark of a great author.

Throughout the series you will notice that the books become a little more adult with each new installment.   I think the reason they are like this is because JK is...

I would recommend this book to anyone who would like something
wonderful to read to a child who is autistic or has trouble sleeping
at night because not only is the story wonderfully written and rather
reminiscent of Tolkiens style in his book, The Hobbit, the book has
it's own originality and style all its own. I highly recommend the book
to anyone with or without children simply because the story touches
upon so many good traits and characteristics which define human spirit
such as quick use of intelligence and reasoning, courage, and having
enough courage to take a stand for all the right reasons....

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone was by far one of the greatest books that I have ever had the pleasure of reading.  Generally in my own readings, I would never read anything below the level of Anne Rice; nothing without large words that would challenge my vocabulary.  Rowling's first novel in the Harry Potter series may not have challenged my vocabulary but it certainly did my imagination.  Her wizarding world created in my mind, a whole new world of idea's and possibilities.

This first book will open the door to any childs mind and allow them to escape to a whole new relm of possibilities...

So, your life has been pretty horrible for the first 10 years...that was how it was for Harry. His parents died when he was just a baby, and he was sent to live with his aunt, uncle and cousin. These horrible people make you sleep in a cupboard under the stair, and basically treat you as a slave. Harry is about to find out that his parents did not die in a car crash, but were wizards that died protecting him. Pretty neat, huh? He finds out that he is famous among the wizarding community as being the "Boy Who Survived". Harry gets to go to a wonderful new world full of magic and promise, Hogwarts!... review »

When first I picked up Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone it was to see what all the furor was about.  I continued to read because it touched a core in me where I was still a child.  At 42 I still had an inner child and J K Rowling knows how to touch that core in many varied and surprising ways.  The story was well developed and the allegiances Harry made with Hermione and Ron seemed to have a strong emotional connection.  Strong character development.

Rowliing's takes you on a thrill ride and the wonder of inexplicable things in this world are brought to the fore.  There is a force...

Thank you Rawling. I haven't sat down in years and really read a book. My sister bought volumn 2 & 3 for my daughter, but I wanted to make sure that my daughter could read the books. I had heard about the books being burned. I wanted to see if it was appropriate for her. I bought book one because you need to start at the beginning. Well, I was hooked. I was drawn into the story and I couldn't put the book down. My husband was amazed. He sad " you can read". Ha Ha. I just don't have the time and I haven't found a book that would really hold me past the first 5 pages. This book did. I wanted more...

When the Harry Potter craze first began, I was skeptical.  First, because I hate fads.  Second, because the masses generally don't pick that well.  When they announced they would be making movies of the series, I realized that this would be one of the most talked about series in my son's era.  So we picked up the first book.

We have read this book over a dozen times now.  It is like visiting an old friend.  Since the series has reached its final chapter, the first book has even greater meaning.  Each time we re-read the book, we gain new insight into what came after.  For my son and I,...

This book about Harry Potter is one of my favorites. The Sorcerer's Stone keeps you interested and anxious about what is going to happen. I love all the characters in this book, especially Harry. Hogwarts School is a magician's school but it looks very similar to many universities.

I know this is supposed to be for children but I am a mom and grandmom and I love this series of books. All of my children have been with Harry since day one.  The teachers at Hogwart's are fun and interesting. The friends Harry makes in school are delightful. I have read all 7 books and enjoy reading them over and over...

To everyone that says that this book starts out too slowly, I say to read it again.  This book was amazing and the first chapter was so charming.  This chapter is what hooked me on the whole series.  This is the only book in which Harry is still just adorable.  He becomes a gloomy youth in the other books and becomes a jerk, but he's still sweet in this one.  This book also has so many subtle hints as to the entire series (which it would have to, being written by a talented author).  The story moves quickly and has lots of adventure.  A perfect book for parents and children (of all ages). ... review »

The Harry Potter series is the best series I have ever read! You can't compare! It is great that the movies have gotten kids into reading these books but at the same time it is a shame because many people figure that they've already seen the movies so they don't need to read the books. This is a huge mistake! The first two book are similar to the movies, but after that the book has quadruple the information. You will be missing out on so many things if you don't read the books! And you really can't get too emotionally invested in the movies, it just can't compare. So please, floow my advice and...

Wow! What a fantastic book with the most wonderful characters. The author does a great job of describing the personalities of each character. I could visualize each character as I read the book. Lots of conversation so very easy to read. I simply could not put the book down, which prompted me to read the rest of the series and see all the movies. I would highly recommend this book and the rest of the series to anyone, young or old. I could not put the book down even to eat! The mystery is intense! A wonderful fictional book from an author with an incredible imagination. I look forward to reading... review »

I love this book. Great writer to keep young and old readers envolved in story. Keep up the series going. Am reading it over and even now get it from library on audio best thing to do. Can listen to it while I play on internet. I am reading and listening to all Rowlings' books about Potter. Can resist them all. Magic of how her story begins and yet the story isn't over yet! Want to know what's after the Order of the Phoenix got to be more and more. Potter just got to get that Voltermore but will he ha ha, only the next book will tell please let the world know I want to read it.

I liked the book, on the whole. I thought that the imagination in the story was amazing, and Rowling really got into kids' heads, mostly. The descriptions are good, the dialouge is pretty good as well. I laughed sometimes in the book, but I wish it was a little bit more funny. I've carefully read this book five times and I must say, though it has some kid parts (stuff that makes kids of higher reading levels roll their eyes) it is a good book, and a good start to the action packed series. I do feel that Rowling could have descibed Voldemort better, though.
