J. K. Rowling - Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone —

I remember the very first day I picked up Harry Potter.  Reading this book took me on a journey that I will never forget.  Harry Potter made history, and we were able to witness it happen.  JK Rowling is a master of spinning tales that are not only amusing, but have deep and rooting plot twists.  Each character is so well developed that every time you re-read a book you learn something new.  That is the mark of a great author.

Throughout the series you will notice that the books become a little more adult with each new installment.   I think the reason they are like this is because JK is writing as her audience grows up.

Harry Potter is a boy who's parents were killed by an evil wizard by the name of Lord Voldemort.  Harry is placed on his Uncle and Aunts doorstep, and unwillingly they take him in.  There is nothing overtly special about Harry until one day he gets an invitation to join the worlds best school of witchcraft and wizardy, Hogwarts.

In Harry's first year he learns the basics of magic and meets his two best friends Hermione and Ron.  There is a race to save the hidden treasure within Hogwarts walls.  Harry, Ron, and Hermione join forces in order to defeat the unknown darkness with in Hogwarts.

This book is very well written and there are times when you are so involved with the story that you forget you are reading a book at all.  I will admit I was never much of a reader until I picked up the Potter series, and now I read anything and everything I can get my hands on.  That being said I have to thank JK Rowling for not only showing me how wonderful reading can be, but an entire generation of kids and adults alike are now picking up books left and right.

Great review! I agree that the real magic here was that Jo got the kids reading again! And the rest of us too, by the way! My 90-year-old aunt and I both love H.P.
