J.K. Rowling - Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets  —

Year two for Harry Potter is destined to be very busy and dangerous. Dobby, the house elf to the Malfoys, tries his very hardest to keep Harry away this year, because he knows what is in store. After several attempts to keep him away, Harry still ends up at Hogwarts, where terrible things are about to happen. An admiring Ginny becomes the unwitting puppet of Tom Riddle and his diary. A new, self involved professor, Gilderoy Lockheart and a new house ghost, Moaning Myrtle, make things a little more interesting. Someone or something starts targeting the students into stone, and it all seems to be centered around Harry. There are a few different suspects, Draco, Hagrid, or even Harry! Harry is hearing a voice calling out that no one else can hear, and a message appears on the wall "The Chamber of Secrets Has Been Opened. Enemies of the Heir, Beware." But no one quite understands what it means. In the search for the answers, and the quest to stop the horrible acts against the students, Harry is thrown into the battle. Ginny is used as bait to lure Harry into the Chamber. They find the hidden location, and Harry has to battle the huge basalisk and defeat Tom Riddle/Lord Voldemort with the help of Dumbledore's phoenix. As fascinating and compelling as the first novel.
