Chiggers are the larvae of harvest or scrub mites. Mites go through three life cycle stages: eggs, larvae, nymphs and then adults. The nymph and adult harvest mites feed on plants and don't annoy us but in the larval stage, they are parasitic. The larval mite will attach itself to tall grass or vegetation so that it can spring into action when a passing animal or person goes by.
