The island may lie only a mile or two offshore of hustling, bustling Cancun, but the mood and vibe of Isla Mujeres couldn't be more different. Cancun has big, glitzy hotels, lively nightclubs, and plenty of sand, sun, and party attitude. Isla Mujeres has sand and sun too, and one of the best beaches in the entire Cancun area, yet it moves more like a sleepy, traditional town on its northern end, with quiet villas spread out through lush green tropical settings of its southern end. Isla Mujeres means island of women, but don't tell my wife that or she won't want me to go there anymore. My wife and I love islands and we love the Caribbean. We sail on our boat as much as we can but when we go to Cancun and Isla Mujeres we don't usually go on our boat because it is less of a sail oriented place. —  It would be pretty easy to sail to Isla Mujeres but there are not many sheltered harbors and coves like there are on the islands in eastern Caribbean.
