When deciding to buy a shower chair, my biggest concerns were that the chair provide stability, comfort, and easy maintenance.  The I-Class Shower Chair by Invacare made my decision much easier.

I purchased Model #9681 because it includes a back piece for support.  The back support is particularly helpful if you find it difficult to sit upright comfortably without something supporting your back.  There is a version (Model #9680) that comes without the back support.

The shower chair provides a solid seating surface to use while showering.  If you have low endurance while standing in the shower or tub, this product enables you to rest comfortably through your shower.

Features

  • Molded seat with drain holes
  • Removable Backrest - ergonomically shaped and snaps into place without tools
  • Weight capacity of 250 pounds
  • Shower holders are built into the seat to enable you to hold on for better support

On the con side of the equation, the chair does not fold up.  Although you can easily remove the backrest, the rest of the chair is simply one big piece.  You need to rinse it thoroughly after each use and remove it from the tub before the next person in line takes his shower.

My biggest gripe with the design of this particular shower chair is that some of the components are made with rust-resistant metal.  Now, rust-resistant does not equal rust-proof.  Even if you thoroughly dry the chair after each use, over time, the metal parts do begin to get rust build up which can flake off.  I suppose this limitation occurs in other brands that have metal parts in the design.  I wish that they could come up with a chair that is all molded plastic so you wouldn't have to worry about the rust problem.  But perhaps that's not practical.

At any rate, this shower chair has been a life saver for me.  Some people may only use it periodically, while others may want to use it every day.  It's especially useful when I'm washing my hair in shower.  I can take as long as I need to and remain comfortably seated.

Overall, if you have any difficulty standing during a shower then I would highly recommend this chair.  It retails for approximately $175 but if you do some comparison shopping you can get it for as low as $90.
