Into the Wild is a thought provoking movie based on a true story about a 22 year old college grad who goes to the extreme to find himself. It tells of his many journeys living on the road, meeting interesting people and experiencing nature in its most raw form. The outdoor scenery is breath taking.
The book by the same name was written by Jon Krakauer who also wrote Into Thin Air (another based on a true story book about Mt Everst climbers). The film was written and directed by Sean Penn. Emile Hirsch played the lead part of Chistopher McCandless. The cast, studded with award winners...

fine art film watcher, character-lover, movie connoisseur, movie buff, into movies that tell a great story, a frequent film-goer, a documentary film lover
Emile Hirsch gives an amazing performance in "Into The Wild" that takes his character from the privileged life of upper middle class Christopher McCandless to the hitchhiking, nearly penniless, adventure-seeking Alexander Supertramp, the name he takes on when he ditches his old life and refuses to be found by his family.
While it may seem he's just a whiney, priviledged kid, rebelling against mom and dad, in this case it's much more than that. He's a young man who comes to the realization that the precscribed plan laid out for him since and BY his birth has left him no room to discover himself...

a movie buff
I read the book, written in 1992 by a journalist for Outdoor magazine shortly after hearing about the movie. Reading the book first made the experience of watching the movie that much more personal. Chris was more than a character in a movie.......he was more than a sensational news story.......he touched your heart, your soul, and had you asking some of the same questions he had been searching for answers to.
I began reading the book with preset moral standards and judgements.....what kind of fruitcake does this kind of thing? By hte end of the book it broke my heart to know how alone he really...

a documentary film lover, into movies that tell a great story
I read Into The Wild, and was looking forward to the movie. However, after seeing it, I was quite disappointed. The movie was only very loosely based on the book. I even reread the book again after seeing the movie to verify this. I was expecting the movie to parallel the book more and was not happy with it, or the extensive length of the movie. Disregarding the book, the movie was ok. A fairly interesting story with some good guest appearences, including Vince Vaughn as his short term employer.

Emile Hirsch plays the role of his life. He was amazing and I still can't believe he was not nominated for an Oscar. Sean Penn is a great director. You can feel his emotion for Chris MCCandless life story in the movie. You either love this movie or hate it. If you always wondered "What if...." regarding your quest for life, you must see this movie.
a movie buff
This is a very good movie that tells about a college grad who is unsatisfied with society, his parents and the status quo. He decides to disappear (doesn't let his family know where he is), abandons his car and takes a few random jobs trying to find his way up to Alaska. Along the way he meets (several) different hippie-types, a 16 year old female musician, a young man who cuts wheat & tells him to 'not get too deep' into anti-society thoughts and an elderly widower (played by Hal Holbrook, the best part of the film). The scenery is gorgeous and Emile is great. Not a happy ending I'm afraid....

seeker of fun and interesting places
I read Krauker's book a few years ago while I was travelling. The book affected me immensely then. I loved the book so much that I told others to read it. It is one of the few books that I have told people to read. Well, when I heard the ad for the movie on the radio, I was ecstatic. I had no idea that this book was coming to the big screen.
Well, like the book, the movie is really inspirational. It makes me want to forget the mundane problems that I may have. I would love to do some more travelling and find more about myself. However, I am not as adventurous or as stubborn...

into movies that tell a great story
I enjoy going to movies by myself so that whatever emotions that I get while viewing, I can freely express. I especially enjoyed the beautiful scenery during this story that showed parts of the country that I have never seen, while telling the story of a young man's journey to "free" himself. I actually did not know it was a true story when I went in the theatre so was very affected by the time it ended. The main character's passion for life was evident and all the more reason to have a good cry in the end!
a movie buff
This movie is great for anyone who loves to be outdoors and understands someone's lack of trust in society today. I have the book but have yet to read it, so I am not comparing this movie to the book for those of you who have read it. Into The Wild was a longer movie but I barely noticed that. You will be amazed at the beauty of the scenery and the actor's compelling performances. This movie is a motivation to go hiking, rafting, etc and just enjoy life and everything in it.
character-lover, into movies that tell a great story, movie buff
This is a beautiful film. Emile Hirsche is amazing as are all the supporting cast. It's hard not to be touched or affected by it by the end. Sean Penn does a good job of revealing the story and all the facts - I am impressed by the family for allowing them to be shown in a "warts and all" kind of light. The soundtrack is wonderful and the cinematography is impressive.

This was a great movie. If you read the book, you will definately enjoy this filsm! The actors were great. I whent with three of my friends and everyone loved it. eventhough it was a bit long, it was still woth it.I walked into it not knowing what to expct but as the film progressed, it kept getting more and more interresting. i was not dissapointed.
into Independent Films, a movie buff, comedy fan
The subject and story behind this film are much more complicated than Sean Penn's (usually a very competent director) movie depicts. The supporting characters are not well developed, which was a great disappointment, and the film was poorly edited. A much better film could be made of this tragic story of a young man's hubris (and probable mental illness).
into Independent Films
This is one of my all time favorite movies. I have read the book as well and I think that Sean Penn did an awesome job with adapting it to the screen.
I love all the actors--really great job.
I couldn't stop thinking about it once I saw it, so I went back and saw it again the same week. I haven't done that since American Beauty!
